I'm a newbie so please be nice. Below is one of the first few photos from my new 30D. I'm loving this hobby!

800 pic is normal round here. Nice pic, although I would have framed it more the right to save cutting off hair.

Ah and its 3am here.......must get to bed....

I think it is a good start. There are some things that could have been done a little better though. Try not to cut off part of the childs head in picture and moving them a little farther away from the wall would get rid of the shadow from her chin and the childs face. That is if it is not a candid capture.

I agree, this is a great hobby if you like being frusterated. :-) But when you get that shot that makes you say "Wow, I can't believe I did that!", it is worth all the money spend and the frustration.

Are you using the software that came with the 30d? Have had mine for a while and thats all I use...wondering if there is something better.

John

John,
I find that I like to use the File Ultilities Program from Canon.
Personally I believe most of us use Photoshop.
But there are several other programs like Paint shop Pro and a few others.
Photoshop elements 5 is great for a hobbiest. And don't forget to get the book..."Photoshop Elements V" by Scott Kelby. He will explain how t use it with easy to use instuctions. And Welcome to the POTN.

Thanks for the candid and honest response. I have been looking at Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson right now. I will definitely mark this down as a book to read. I teach at a middle school and they have PS on many of the computers, but really haven't sat down to play with it yet. To be honest, this photography has cut into many of my other activities, aka: fishing...lol. Kinda addictive!! Have always been around some type of camera, but when I bought my 30d it just started something that I can't leave alone. Make sense?

regards,

John

Thanks everyone for the advice. This is the reason why I came here and continue to come back. :-) I have lots to learn and will definitely take your words into account in future shots.

John: I was playing with Apple's Aperture for this photo.
