i had to look at a job in woodside yesterday so of course i took my camera gear and stopped in at the historical filoli mansion for an hour and a half.
i took the 300L f4 IS, 100 f2 and 24-70L. we talk about bokeh alot, and here are some sample of what i consider decent bokeh from these lenses.

On a 5D, correct? I really like the first one.

How about from a 24 1.4L. Who'd thunk it. The wall with the square tile is only a couple feet back from the fan.

I was gonna say, i have never seen that creamy smooth bokeh from a crop cam.

Here's one using a 30D with a 300mm f/2.8 and 2XTC. I almost like the background better than the bird.

Thanks ed. Those 24-70L shots look great!
I've started to think about the 24-70L and the 17-55IS as possible candidates to replace my 17-40L mainly because I think the f4 is limiting me a bit. I did some searching last night and found you to be a big fan of the 24-70. :) If I buy the 24-70L and start having second thoughts, you are going to be the first person I look to for reassurance! hehe j/k.

300 for me.
that's one reason i kept the 300L instead of the 100-400L -- it a great close-up lens.

i think the 24-70L has better bokeh and the 17-55 will never be able to blow out a background like the brick because it can't be used on a FF camera.
i have a love/hate relationship with the 24-70L but it's the best option for me. it was a different lens on the 20d -- excellent for portraits.

Great shots Ed. One day, I too will shoot full frame. :) I'm really hoping Canon will update the 5D this fall, but my gut feeling tells me they will update the 30D first...

that's a great picture. the background doesn't distract from the subject yet you can tell what it is. some of the best pictures that i've seen were taken with the 300L f2.8.

Thanks Ed. Got the lens six days ago, and still learning how to use it.
