Jenny let me know about this site a while back, so I joined after I got my new camera ;)

I found it by luck - I have been lurking for a while but just joined this week. I joined a different community when I first got my camera but never posted because they used your real first and last name as your screen name.

I like your pre edited shot... If you want us to play with it a little, turn on your image editing okay button... and we'll make suggested edits for you.

It's a great shot to start with... I would only like to brighten up the subjects here a bit. The background is much brighter then they are... so I would do a quick mask and then apply curves only to the subjects... I might darken the background, but it would depend on how it looks after the first adjustment...

Is the last post straight from camera? Or did you make some adjustments in a raw editor? It looks a little bit altered in the highlight area. but what do I know... lol :)

Kristy,

Thanks for replying. The photo is VERY edited - I took the photo a couple months back before I made the comitment to learn and love my camera. I'm also working on my photo editing skills in Photoshop CS and Lightroom (which I just purchased this week). ;o) Attaching original below.

The fill in lighting feature is a bit too much done and makes the shot look artificial. I'd tone that down a bit. Also I'd consider cropping off the left so the subjects are off center and are looking into the right.

I love your daughter's eyes!!! I quite like the shot, but the first is definitely a bit overdone... don't mind the pre-crop/neat image shot in terms of saturation. :)

I'm with Tee Why, but thought it might be a case of over-used "shadows and highlights" feature. It can kill a shot if over-used. Play with levels and even use the "exposure" (Image -> Adjustments) slider.

Nice pic though :)

For me, this has black and white written all over it!!! I love BnW's, especially of my children. I do this a lot w/ candids where the lighting was tough. It can turn a great capture into a great image.

If this were mine, I would clone out the other picture and convert it to BnW....

Just a thought.
