After wandering around here [my new-found Home]... reading postings and links, and looking in my G-1 Book... I shot a few RAW images.

So what? What does one [that knows what they are doing] DO with them ??

Aah yes, a noobie question on RAW. Good to know that people are showing interest in the dark arts. Of course, I am going to chastise you for asking a question without first doing a search.

But to help you out, here is a recent post I put on a good RAW primer:

http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=32761

and some simple Answers to your question:

1. RAW is not an acronym....it is meant just to mean the raw data. Canon RAW files are called CRW (Canon RAW). Nikon's is NEF.

2. RAW is simply what the camera's sensor catches when you take a picture. It is unedited, uncompressed, raw data. Nothing is added to the information and no processing is done to it.

3. RAW files are generally bigger than JPG files, which are compressed.

4. RAW captures more dynamic range (more levels of light), so you can use RAW files to change a lot of lighting and exposure elements after the fact in post-processing.

5. RAW files have to be converted by software before you can use them. Use your ZoomBrowser program that came with your camera, or use a good program is Adobe Photoshop CS or BreezeBrowser (www.breezesys.com).

Hope this helps,

Thanks for your patience... Just before I came back here I stumbled onto the 'Luminous Landscape' page..... where.... all my questions were answered.

So...as I wipe the egg off my face, I thank you for expanding on that information.

Thanks again... really...

Hey no eggs were thrown. Actually, the next time you need to ask a question that relates to a post, go ahead and ask it in the thread. You don't need to PM me. That way, others can benefit from your thoughts.

Just a thought  .

I don't know why, but I feel I should be calling you 'small block'. :? (I had a '58 BelAir w/ a 348 Turboglide (terrible glide).

What a pig.

Also had a '96 Z-28. Definitely not a pig.

'348 was a good engine...with three, two-barrels on it. But the 283 'revved'....
