can you legally add quotes to a book you are selling?

I have asked this in the other forums and all I got is an I think so..

So...why not ask the pros eh?

From what I've been taught in my college English classes, as long as you cite the quote (essentially it'd be the author), then it shouldn't be considered plagiarism.

I'm not a lawyer, so don't take my advice without further consultation (a lawyer or the like).

I have quotes on my greeting cards, and have used them in my photo books.
But , I always include who the quote is made by.

I believe that in the UK you are allowed to quote up to 25% of a text without breaching copyright, so long as you include an acknowledgement.
If you're quoting entire poems you may be in breach of this, but if it's phrases (single lines from poems or songs), then you can probably get away without even an acknowledgement.

most quotes that people use fall into common useage, just cite the author and you'll be fine.

Legally you must credit the author if it is a published work.
