Another hobby of mine... some people knock it for being kind of nerdy, but I think they're just jealous they don't get to play with toy cars :P

LOVE'EM!
I don't know how you shoot them because if you do the size ratio to speed, they are probably moving over 200mph! Not to mention they aren't that big (well big for RC cars).
I had one, I loved it then lost it... Makes me want get in to the game again. These shots absolutely amazing. love to see more!

These are just outstanding, can't see them enough, I looked at this thread a few times, and not a single time was I not breath taken! What lens? What settings? Do you have any BAD shots? Or are they all awesome!?

SWEEEEEEET !!!....
By far some of the best RC photos I have ever seen.
Congrats!...

Thanks! Every shot you see was either taken with the 17-40 f/4L or 70-200 f/4L... you can probably figure out which one was used on a shot-by-shot basis. Outdoors on a bright sunny day, my baseline setting is 1/800 at f/8, ISO200. I just adjust it from there depending on whether or not I want more/less DOF or motion blur (panning shots, tires spinning, etc).
Do I have any bad shots? Hehe... thousands. The keeper rate for this kind of thing is pretty low.. somewhere around 30-50%, and that's just for something that's in the frame, reasonably sharp, and not entirely boring. The standout shots that I would consider really good/portfolio quality (at least by my standards) are few and far between, maybe 5% or less per event.
I've got no shortage of shots like these on my computer

Excellent work !, I love No 14, looks like it's coming to getcha !, either that or it's waving at the camera, saying " Hi fans !", just like something out of the Disney movie 'Cars'.

Number 3 of your first set kicks you know what. Excellent use of shadows, great environmental portrait. Excellent job of capturing the action.
I enjoy RC as well, but like to keep them in the air rather than on the ground.

I've been published in a magazine once. Right now I've got two magazines asking for contributor work, and a third one that's considering me for a position as a full-time staff photographer.

Nope, you definately have corner marshalls, and down the straights marshalls, and by the table-top marshalls, and marshalls, that seem to be asleep, and talking to their mates instead of marshalling, marshalls (not that i've anything against marshalls at all  :D )
Brilliant shots, have recently just sold all my Hyper 7 Pro UK spec gear due to not having time to race any more, and between 86' - 94' raced 1/10th electric 2wd & 4wd (Kyosho, Schumacher, Losi, Yokomo) buggies.
Great fun - but expensive (said tongue-in-cheek with photography as new hobby  )

Wilko, that's a 600mm f/4, and no, it's not mine :(. It belongs to my friend Chris Boice, a great guy that that does some incredible work (www.boice.smugmug.com if anybody's interested).

Fantastico. Bravo. Are you like laying on your belly to get some of these shots? Seems like you have to be.
I had one of these cars years ago. First time I took it out I crashed it into a concrete curb, broke the front end off and never fixed it.

Awesome shots, sorry to revive, but i found this link from the SLR thread on RCtech.net/forum
I myself have been racing RC for 7 years or so, the last two weekends I went to a race specifically to shoot them.
Heres a few that didnt suck lol
1. Parking lot racing at the Local Hobby Town USA
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1423/866850778_c3bfe2f623_o.jpg
2. Also from Hobby Town
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1137/865907693_e75b0a6783.jpg
3. This is from a permanent track Leisure Hours Raceway. They held a large event sponsored by Byrons and Futaba. This shot is my backround on my mac at home. I dont know if you can see it here but the left rear tire is lifting.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1055/793599113_9970b62a4e.jpg
4. Little help from the spectators at the same race
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1368/758175562_1098b55508.jpg
5. There were a couple photographers there that Im sure were getting paid for this. In this shot the guy with the little point and shot works for the track, the guy in the backround had the nicest equipment.

Wow, I'm surprised this thread is still around. I guess I'll have to post some more photos then : p
These are all from the Hot Rod Hobbies Off-Road Shootout last weekend. This was my first time shooting for a magazine (Xtreme RC Car), so I'm pretty stoked. For those interested in RC, a little background: We were lucky to have most of the top-tier American drivers there (Cavalieri, Maifield, Amezcua, Truhe, Easton, Robbers, etc), and we even had a handful of Japanese drivers from Yokomo and HB, most notably Masami Hirosaka and Atsushi Hara. Also, something I was pretty excited about, this race marked Brian Kinwald's return to racing after a two-year leave due to health problems. He's never really been all that healthy, but it's been especially hard for him recently. It was looking like things have been improving for him, though, and I know everybody was happy to see him.

Although it's kinda hard to tell what's going on here (it's 5 frames stitched together), this is Masami Hirosaka driving with his feet. It's a normal demo he does at many of the big races he attends. He can also drive one-handed and with the radio behind his back.

Love 14.. I'm an old Tamiya boy from way back in the 90's.. With my electric cars. When owning a gas car was something only those who are grown up and rich could afford..
Almostmakes me want to get my gas engine out and work on something new.. Almost.. hehe

Great shots, Great to see Dirt Back, i remember racing him in the states at the 04 touring car worlds, he stands on his tanny case on the drivers stand, a wonderful guy and a wonder return to racing.I find it hard to take pics at race meetings cos i'm always racing at them, and the weather in the UK ain't always to great, but gunna try to get some soon to post.
