View Full Version : Marketplace Trends...what's your opinion?

Now...I don't own an XT, and I never will again. I hate the thing. However, I find it curious that there's no less than 8 BG-E3 grips for sale in the marketplace, and that's just on the front page. What's up? Defect?
Also, why do you suppose so many things seem to be sold in waves? Is it just rebates and updates/upgrades? Follow the leader? What?

I think some of it is purely random. Sometimes people are sitting on the fence on whether to sell or not, then they see that item in the Marketplace and jump on the bandwagon. With the BG-E3's it could just be people who jumped into getting a dslr and all of the accessories without really putting a lot of thought into the process, thinking that dslr = better pix. They get it home, realize it doesn't give them as good a pic out of the box as their P&S, and get frustrated.

Maybe they realize how utterly stupid a big ole grip looks on a lil bitty camera?

I'd sell my grip if I weren't so lazy. Once it's on my camera the thing is just too big for my hands. Lots of people complain the XT is too small. For me it's just right. As for why everyone is selling their grips at once? Maybe the Mark III folks are selling their Mark II's or 20D/30Ds and so those folks with the XTs are upgrading? Who knows. Maybe there's a run of little-handed photographers about who are less lazy than me? It's like asking, why do geese fly in a V shape. They just do. ;)

Ronald, you are the acknowledged expert on the marketplace and selling. I'd rather hear your opinion/surmise as to what appears to be a trend.
The only grip I bought was for my 20D. It was the Canon grip. It had no problems, but I just didn't like it. I wanted the built-in kind and that's one among many reasons I got a 1 series.

That's one of the very reasons I went BACK from a 1-series. I owned both the MkII and the MkIIN. Both were fine bodies (although I thought noise levels sucked ***), but I much prefer to be able to take my grip off, and be lightweight. I also preferred the controls of the 30D/5D. The 5D is the best there is, as far as I'm concerned. IQ, noise, controls, viewfinder, etc. It's all tops.
What do I think is happening in the marketplace? I think it's an ass-backwards follow the leader game. Along the same lines as in high school when one kid would ask to use the restroom, and virtually the entire class would follow suit. However, seems silly to flood the market with a particular item. Each time you do, the value of that item goes down, as each fella has to undercut the next to get it sold. Then, that cheap price sets a precedent. That's why I wait when I'm selling something...I don't HAVE to sell my stuff..I just like to get new stuff. I can hold out to avoid the rush. Nothing I hate more than to have some jerk pm me and say "hey, a ____ sold on FM a few weeks ago for $50 less than you're asking. Will you drop your price?"
No I won't, a**face. I didn't set my price to be stupid.

Yeah baby ... that's three agreements in a row. You on a roll big boy :-)
As to market ... coincidence, or folks know an upgrade avalanche is a comin' so they wanna be in there selling before the bottom drops.

Speakin of marketplace trends - have ya seen the number of ID Mk II's that are up for sale?
Don't suppose it couldn't have anything to do with the Mk III becoming available.....;)

As I said...some have to do with rebates/upgrades. I don't know if anyone noticed, by the way, that you get $100 off the new Pixma PRO 9000 when you buy an SLR same time. Any one, too..not just pro series.

Then you would love the Mark III.

LOL!
In a former job, all business trends were explained by one of three things:
Timing
Mix
Market
Timing - Canon sales of grips peaked in [whatever] and now the equipment is starting to wear out.
The catch-all is mix -- The current mix of gear in the market is driving excess supply of grips.
Market + Mix + Timing (the winner with a board of directors) -- Superior new grips have entered the market while older grips are weating out.
Hey, it was a Finance job.
Output: The spin cycle in the puzzle palace on chloroform row.
  ;)

Oh I know I would. I'd adore one.
However, it'll quite a long time before something that expensive would ever be in my bag, unfortunately.

My opinion is some generous rich guy/girl should pm me offering a 1 series for free.
Other than that I don't have one, either an opinion or a 1 series ;)

I had the XT, a great starter camera, and I liked it even better with the grip on it! Maybe its a personal thing?

Love the flip around controls it offers and the greater weight..10 hrs with a 70-200 and endless chimping (histogram)
