Doesn't this lens have inner-focusing/zoom? In one picture I saw of it (without sun-shade) it looked as the front was extended during zoom. Is this true? If so, can it really be weather-sealed? (isn't this thing supposed to be weather-sealed too?) I don't like lenses extending, so I'm getting some cold feets here. Could some owners please tell me if it indeed does extend, and if it bothers you with this lens?

Its odd - it extends when you zoom to wide angle. Why? Because with the hood on, the front element of the lens buries itself deeper within the hood as you zoom towards the telephoto end to give the best coverage, while it comes towards the front to prevent vignetting at full wide. This more-or-less optimizes the hood's effectiveness as the lens is varied through its zoom range.

At the wide-angle end, does it come long enough out to turn a polarizer without removing the hood? That would be cool :) Anyway, think I take my 10D and the car tomorrow, and drive into a big "photoshop" in our Capital to try out some L-glass, and see how it feels and handles :)

At 24mm you can turn the CPL very easily...mind the fingerprints though :) I think you will liker the 24-70. It is one of my favourite Lenses

Nice to hear. It's either this or the 17-40mm. I have never tried the 24-70, so I have to try it before deciding.

That's the hard decision - both cover the midrange on a 10D/300, but one gives you a good deal more width while the other goes long. I guess you really need to look at how you shoot with what you have now.

Right now I shoot telephoto.. _ALL THE TIME_. Not necessareliy because I want, but my widest lens is the 50mm 1.4 (77mm equivelant). So I'm seeking one of those lenses to go wider. Surely the 17-40 will get me widest, but to purchase it, I'll temporaely have to sell my 50mm I think, and by going the 24-70-route I would then have complete f/2.8 coverage from 24-200mm (x1.6 = 38-320), whilst by going for the 17-40, I would get a gap from 40-70 (x1.6 = 64-112). So I'm not really finished finding out which one to get. Guess it'll be a lot easier to decide once peeked through a 24mm mounted, and see how wide it feels in the viewfinder.

Sell the 50 and buy both you know you want too. Heck why not sell the car keep the 50 and get the 16-35 f2.8 and the 24-70 f2.8 then you'd have 16-200 all f2.8.

Just a thought.

My 24-70 L has the rubber gasket on the lens mount, so I presume it is weather-sealed. The extending doesn't bother me at all, as weather sealing does not mean you can drop it in the lake, just that it is protected from rain and the elements. Canon may have used scrapers or sliding gaskets for this purpose.
Besides, as mentioned previously, the action of the front housing - extending as you zoom wider with the hood being attached to the fixed portion - has the very cool effect of allowing the hood to work properly throughout the zoom range!

Now, if Canon would only make a hood for this lens for the 1.6 crop factor... :(
