Got a letter today, saying I am to meet up for one year of military services on August 19. So that could mean little "quality Internet time". But keeping me completely away from the Internet they'll never manage =D Got an Internet-capable cellphone, acting as a modem for my PDA, so I _WILL_ get email in the trenches ;) I'm also saving up for a powerfull laptop with a highresolution-screen, so I can keep on processing images, and hopefully hook it onto the Internet from campsite, but I can't guarantee the Internet-connection. My cellphone-link is charged by the amount of KB's transfered and is way to expensive to use for regular web-surfing.
So who knows. Looks like I'm heading for the north of Norway with midnight-sun and everything. Quite cold up there, but the nature is spectacular, and it's a place where everyone who's been there, are telling you "HAVE TO LIVE" at least for a while, just to experience how beautiful it is up there. Hope I won't freeze to death though :(

Good luck to you. Be careful!
If its anything like the US military is (or was anyway), you'll not be keeping much of your worldly possessions including phones and such. They'll even supply you with the proper "tighty-whitey" underwear and plenty of camo-green clothing.
Stay safe and enjoy the adventure.

I hope so :) And BTW: I'm not sure I'll stick in north Norway for the entire period. Given the chance (which is quite large), I head off to Kosovo, Afghanistan or somewhere else they might need soldiers :)
Lot of guys I know have gotten the opportunity to do foreign services after only some few months of service. That really helps on the L-budget =D But it would most definitely bring down all hopes of permanent Internet-connection for a laptop :/

Yeah, they do supply white underwear and green camo-clothes, but they allow soldiers to keep cell-phones, cameragear, laptops and other possessions they bring in. Some places they also have both a "secure" and "unsecured" network, so you can hook laptops the unsecure ones to have Internet-access from the barracks. I'm called in to serve time in the "electronic warfare" battalion, so the chances I get such benefits are far better than it would be other places, as our job mainly is operating mobile communication-networks in the field, and using radio/computer-equipment to keep the enemies from operating their communications.

You won't get rid of me all that easy I think. Might not be in here so frequent, but I will find a way to get Internet-connectivity wherever I am, rest assured ;)

vvizard,
Here's my 2 pence...
12 months is nothing really, I have been at my current job for going on 7 years (in Sept). I was in Tucson, Az for 3 yrs, 2 month and although I hated it, it really went quick and the time since I joined this forum which is over a year has gone incredibly fast. Hang in there, it is not forever; although it may seem that way. Lets hope you don't go from extreme cold to extreme heat. You will more than likely meet up with some really interesting people, much like you have on this forum. Enjoy!
