I have a room I'm going to start using for a studio - 15x15 or so. I was thinking of starting with 1 AB800 and an AB 800 ring flash. I have an Adorama (cheapo) strobe now and my 430EX, but I would like to get into more portrait work. Will this suffice or should I add one more 800? I actually have funds for once (buying a 24-70 or 17-55 to go with it, as well) and I would like to try to get everything in one fell swoop. Softboxes and stands are in the package as well as the wired remote.
Thoughts?

I agree. If you have the means to start with 3 B800's or 2 B800's and an ABR800 you'll be in good shape. Too much power is an interesting thing. If you knew exactly what you'd be doing did not plan on doing high key with no detail then I'd say you could do it with B400's but you'd have to be real sure. The safer bet is to go with B800's and as we say very often.. I'd rather have too much light and turn the power down than to not have enough power and be at the top of the power slider with nowhere to go.

Man it's easy to spend my money! I coulda done this in the lens forum! Oh wait, they did already... Sigh. OK, I guess the cart goes from 900 to 1300. But man, I'm like really gonna be so happy! Right? Right?

I know what you're saying and the tendency is for everyone to tell you to spend gobs of cash. Unless someone specifically says they have a tight budget or gives a dollar amount then I tend to recommend what will do the job and do it well without compromise. I have no reason to tell anyone to buy gear or more gear than they need. With the information that was provided and no knowledge of how much power will actually be needed I made the recommendation for 3 B800's as a generic, good quality setup that will not leave you wanting for power and will give you a balanced set of strobes.

No prob - I was somewhat kidding. Like I said, I've got the funds this time, I'm going to get what I need. Otherwise, I know I'll cheap out somewhere and end up with a hodgepodge of pieces, all based on funds available at the time. Better to spend $1400 now and get the goods. I may not get my 100-400 right now...sadly. Should have NEVER sold the damn thing. Sigh. But at least I'll get the 24-70 and the lights. Hopefully they'll make back some of their cost...
