I posted these in the N&A share, but as usual for me as of late I am not getting much of a response. :(
I went to the zoo a few weeks ago and had a few shots that I liked and thought I would post them for some feedback, good or bad. So tell me what you think. I am a big boy, I can handle it. :)
My favorite shot from the trip.

#1 Excellent, I can see why it is your fave. I would crop slightly tighter though to lose some of the black at top and bottom. Then print and frame.
#2 Doesn't do much for me, there's nothing wrong with it technically it just doesn't grab my attention. Tighter crop to lose some of the foreground again, it might also give it more impact.
#3 I like this one too, the composition works well. Some playing around with saturation and curves in PS would probably really make the colours pop.
#4 Too low, its an interesting pretty looking bird but the angle means there is no eye contact. Probably not much you could have done given where the bird was other than wait and hope!

Thank you for your thoughts.
I left the first one in a 3:2 ratio but would likely crop as you mentioned for print (8x10 comes to mind).
On the second I purposely left some foreground to show some distance between me and him but I guess that didn't work. :)
I'll mess around with #3 some more but the colors really pop already on my calibrated screen. Too much more and I am afraid clippliing would occur.
I agree with number 4. I was so mad, he was originally about 6 feet directly in front of my but I had switched shooting modes and the two shots I got of him were completely black. I followed him for a bit and this was the best I got.

all pretty, number 1 needs to be color corrected a bit and number 3 the background is bit too dark, id separate it from the bird and raise the brightness, then apply gaussian blur to keep the bird isolated.
great shots, makes me wanna try my hand at zoo shots again.

:)
The color on number 1 is intentional. It is the combination of a LR preset (similar to the 300 effect) and some curves.
As for number 3, this shot was taken in an aviary and most of the shots required flash. I also left the background dark intentionally to bring more focus in on the bird.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Actually the colours look great on my laptop at home, my monitor at work can't be very good!

Content wise, the first shot absolutely is hands down the better of the shots. Color wise, none of them except the second shot feel very comfortable - the lighting doesn't look natural. Can't put my finger on it. The colors are bright a lively... maybe just too much so. I do think the cat images really has some strong potential... nice capture on that one..

The second shot is the only one that hasn't been lit by flash so you are right, they are not natural. Good catch.
Thanks for the comment on the cat shot. I have four shots of him "posing" and I picked this one as my favorite. The LR preset that I used made him appear to have a spot light on him which I liked even more.
