View Full Version : Shutter Lag

I had quite the discussion with my best friends father tonight about whether or not any of the compact digital cameras can compete with the shutter response time of a SLR digital camera, such as the Canon Digital Rebel XT. Particularly when shooting sports such as our kids baseball and basketball games or track meets.

I told him when I was shopping I didn't find any of the "point and shoot" cameras that compared to the shutter response of a SLR. I bought mine a couple of years ago.

Am I wrong? Have the compacts improved to the point of being as good as the SLR's when it comes to the shutter lag or lack of?

Any comments would be appreciated.

I don't think you're wrong. I haven't seen a P&S yet that comes close.

70ms for one of the recent Fuji P&S.
That's as fast as many DSLRs

Found an interesting article with some specific numbers you might enjoy here (http://www.impulseadventure.com/photo/shutter-lag.html). Shutter lag is decreasing, but autofocus time also needs to be taken into consideration. DSLRs still have an advantage, especially when the whole process is taken into consideration.

The shutterlag is soooooo frustrating on a point and shoot. Even the so-called 'no shutter lag' models don't compete with slr technology. On top of this of course there's the start up time which can take a couple of seconds...just to add to the drama.

Thank you all for your replies. Sounds like the P&S cameras are getting closer but still do not compare with SLR's especially when shooting fast action such as sports.

Thanks again...
