Interesting PROBLEM with 300D

I am finding that when I have auto rotate on in the camera it does not export all the settings information to my computer? If auto rotate is not on then there is no problem.

Has anyone else had this problem or is it just they way the camera is?

Can you be a little more specific? What particular settings and what program are you trying to examine them with?

I took a bunch of photos on Program (P) mode and when i uploaded them to my computer all the normal ones had all the exif informaion with them and the ones that were taken vertically and then rotated automatically by the camera had no data with them... like shutter, apperature, and so on.. If auto rotate is not on them they are fine.

What did you upload them with and what are you viewing them with?

The camera doesn't rotate the image, it just sets a flag in the file header that tells programs that can read the flag how the frame should be rotated. Some programs, like Breezesys DownloaderPro will actually rotate the image losslessly and preserve the EXIF info.

Perhaps the program you're using for the rotation is deleting the EXIF information.

I use DownloaderPro for downloading and I've taken thousands of frames with the 300D. Many of them were rotated and I never lost the EXIF information.

I agree with dtrayers. Some software will cause data loss with something as simple as a rotation. Irfanview also has a lossless jpg rotation.

Thanks Guys... I have been using iPoto with my jpgs so I will do and experiment tomorrow to see if it is iPhoto.

I use simple copy / paste procedure with my CF card reader. This way all the files are copied as they are without any changes. When I open the images in Photoshop CS for post-processing, it rotates the vertical images automatically.

altho i don't have th rotate option on
but doesn't that juat rotate the image on the screen not the image itself?

I have not experienced this particular problem. I transfer all my images with a card reader.

But I have seen that for example ThumbsPlus could not display EXIF information correctly so as other say it is probably more likely that it is cause by the software You are using.

If your viewing software can read the flag, it will rotate the image as it opens, but the image will come out of your camera sideways. I prefer to use windows viewer and rotate the file manually.

Be careful with JPEG files! Windows viewers/rotaters are not lossless so everytime you rotate a photo, you're recompressing the file. Other software (like BreezeBrowser) are lossless and will rotate JPEGs with no recompression.

how is the file viewer utility that comes with the Canon software for this... is it lossless?
