During the festival I was talking to a woman who was photographing for her journalist boyfriend. Now, he is freelance but do a lot of work for various national major daily news papers. He was wondering if I would possibly be in Hamburg at a certain date and if so could consider photographing a major sell-out act for him as he was going there to do a review for the show.
Now, he said the main paper he writes for would not pay for travel, hotel etc but would definetly buy pictures.
It would mean that I would get published in a major paper or more. I could be published in UK and in France or other places.
So, would you pay your own travel to do that and hope to break even on sales or would you give it a miss?
She - can't decide if I should book the flight or not.

Find out what the paper pay before making the decision.
Remember there is always the chance that a major story will break and the review/photos may not run - that's a risk when dealing with newspapers.
See if you can get a guarantee that they will buy a certain number of photos from you.

If I knew I had a pass for the show and money in the bank to cover the trip - I'd go as this is a band I really want to see. I would be able to get passes for shows, apart from possibly London as that is "home-town".
The tour is practically sold out. It is a massive production. If I knew for certain I'd break even or at least not loose too much, then I will probably go.
I will have to get in touch the the journalist and see what the deal is. I would rather they pay for travel, use what they want and I retain copyright to sell to other mags if I want to.

It does sound like a great oppetunity She, however in my experience with the british media, you're unlikely to get paid enough for a photo or two, to cover your expenses of the trip, considering flight, hotel, food etc.
but then again, you are going to get a hell of an experience out of it.
I'd miss it, but then again im only 18. And if you're wanting to break into the more mainstream published photos sorta thing, then this sounds like a great chance.
whats the band?
