I love my new D-60. I purchased it from Crown Camera in Northern Calif. And yes you can completely turn off the sleep mode or set it to sleep with a wait time up to 30 minutes.

I know how you feel. I recently sold my G2 and bought a D60. After years of shooting with film SLRs I couldn't get used to not having interchangeable lenses. When I saw how stunning Canon's CMOS images were with the D60 I knew I had to have one. So I saved up al my spare "beans" for a couple of months and bought one with a 50mm f/1:1.8 lens. I'll be adding a 28-135 USM/IS at the end of the month. All my film gear was Pentax (gone the way of Ebay recently).
If you don't already have one, consider buying either the 420EX or 550EX flash. I use the 420. You can set a custom function to emit the infrared focus assist beam without firing the flash for use in low light. Really helps the AF snap in quickly when it might otherwise struggle with the white lamp built into the camera.
What kind of photography do you do? What lenses are you using? Are you having FUN? I hope so!

I've been using Eos Elan for 9 years, and am interested in "upgrading" to digital format in a manner that permits me to use my EF lenses. With the problems expressed by the D30 users on this web site, particularly the autofocus issues, I am somewhat concerned. In the experience of those who have the D60, is it any better than the D30 on the autofocus feature? Are there any other major issues I should be addressing when considering moving into the e-photo world?

I am in the same dilemma, should we buy a D30 or a D60, we have a EOS 3 with all the gear you would ever want and a stack of EF lenses, a 420 ex flash etc.
We shoot mostly outdoors daytime with a lot of twilight work so flash is always in use. We want to be able to produce an image quickly on site for folks to take home on the day....cannot do this with the EOS 3.

How do you set a custom function to emit the infrared focus assist beam without firing the flash for use in low light? I just got a D60 and am thinking of buying the 420EX flash for it? I know alot of people have said to wait and get the 550EX but I can't afford it. You seem to be having luck with the 420! Any more tips?

I don't have my camera gear with me but I believe it's custom function 5 (set to either 2 or 3?) that allows for the use of IR auto focus beam without firing the flash.
