I went to load Photoshop CS and it asks for me to Register the product either Online, by phone, etc. . . it also mentions something to the effect that I have 30 days to register it or the software will lock me out? What is this about? How does this work? Does this mean that if I register it, I can't load it onto a second computer (my laptop and my desktop). Any thoughts?

They will let you load it on a second computer. Beyond that, you will have to call and explain why you're installing it on yet another computer. They use the same type activation key as Microsoft.

What does "Type activation Key" mean? Do I have to register the software? How about if I don't want to register it?

There is a number, the activation key, that you have to enter. If my memory serves me correctly it is on the cd case. You have to enter that to get it activated.
Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't you want to register the software :?:
Once activated and registered you will find that your system will autoupdate from Adobe whenever they have a patch.

The key is "activate'
You need to register and then "activate" the softare.. or else it will stop functioning.

Big Brother. And the necessity of reloads in times of failure, etc. This crap really sucks when you need to call someone to get activation for a critical piece of server software that exploded at 9:00 PM on a Saturday... Aaaarrrggghhh!
I refused to go to XP because of this crap. I relented with PS because it is PS and I couldn't live without it.
This type of stuff is truly unnecessary. I saw XP cracks *before* it was officially released. I'm sure that PS cracks already exist - I'd be amazed if they didn't. So why bother putting us paying customers through [possible] hell when you're not going to stop the crackers anyway?
Oops. Sorry. <rant off>
