I like it.
You should crop the left side with the fingers. A close portrait like this one should always focus the attention on the eyes. So you don't need the bulk blank space on the left. Maybe crop a little on the right site also to balance the photo.
I like the shadow on the face and the little light glimmer in the dark eye.
Good job. Keep it up!

I think your crop is too tight IMHO. Imagine the head of the child in the dark side and you will see you've cropped his ear. I think this is the crop:

No. Not a square. If you look at the bottom of the photo, you will see this:
FORUM INFO: image size as posted, 496x427
And this is not a square IMHO

You can do this with the crop tool in Photoshop. Select the crop tool from the tools pallette and then look at the options bar at the top. You will see the crop size there. Just choose the size of print your frame takes. You can use either pixels or inches. Then start at the top left of the photo where you want the crop to start and drag it diagonally to the bottom right. If the crop window doesn't show the exact framing you want, then you can just click in the center of the crop and move it to where you want it. If you mess up, just hit the esc key and start over. When you get what you want, then choose image>crop. Now you can print it the exact size you want. When you specify a crop size for the crop tool, it will always produce that size image, no matter how much of the photo is included in the crop.
