View Full Version : Attention all European Members (Meeting)

Hi everyone,
Not intending to be divisive from those members across the pond, merely trying to suggest a reasonable alternative, BUT .....
How about a meet over here in Europe - as per my suggestion in Nilologists topic (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=32960)?
Cost would be reduced re travel, no jet lag, etc! We could even submit/exchange some pics if the event kicks off with the other planned meetings later! With companies like Easyjet, BMI Baby, and so on, most places would be fairly accessible just for the day if appropriate.
So here's my suggestion - the Highlands of Scotland in the Autumn - great scenery, wonderful wildlife, and not least of all a trip to the whisky distilleries to sample great scottish whisky!
Cheers,
Barry

Hi Barry,
I second that option for a pan-European user meeting!
What would be the city to fly to?
Other choices in Europe might include places in Spain (e.g. Basque country) or France.
Best regards,
Andy

HI Andy,
Sorry for the delayed reply but I've been on night duty. But re your suggestion I'd be prepared to fly anywhere within Europe so I'm open to any suggestions.

As per the enigmatic psk 4363's suggestion:-
Half of all the world's malt whisky is distilled here in Moray in the north east of Scotland. As malt is the thinking man's tipple, and we are, of course etc., etc., this is the place to come.
Book early though guys, this is a busy season here!!
Elgin is the county seat, but Forres is the nicest town :D

I booked my cottage in scotland for mid september a few months back, so if there is a meet I'll pop along for a bit :D :D

How about Inverness City, Scotland which is the 'Capital of the Highlands', is near masses of superb scenery (you might even see 'The Loch Ness Monster') will have enough accommodation and has an airport, railway station and good roads for those coming from further afield?
Mid September to early October is very photogenic.

Not sure if I'd be able to make it at all, but I'll be watching this thread with interest.
September to October sounds good. :)

Inverness is fine for me - especially in the Autumn, as it's so colourful in The Highlands at that time of the year. Either September or the second half of October is best for me (I'm in Kos for the first two weks of October).
How about everyone else?
Cheers,
Barry

Here's the proposal then:-
The Trossachs area of Scotland at a date to be fixed in the second half of October 2004. Those who can DEFINITELY make it to the Trossachs at that time of the year reply to this message ASAP so that we can then set up a definite day, or weekend, to meet. Get back to me with 3 options for dates and the largest vote sets the date.
Time is getting on so don't delay - especially if accomodation is required.

Am definatly up for going but can only do weekends. If thats ok with everyone, I'll probably be flying up from london on the friday. Is this place relatively easy to get to? Sorry but I really don't know scotland  Sounds like a great plan... can't wait. :D

Early October best any weekend - but early best

OK then,
People are tending to prefer later rather than sooner, so lets get the dates settled - two options: -
a) the weekend Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th October, or
b) the weekend Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st October.
Let me know ASAP your choices and the majority will rule - I'm easy either weekend. Either e-mail me on barry.fairclough@zen.co.uk, or PM me, or reply to this thread, with you preferred choice :D .
If it helps I will be travelling from the west Manchester area, up the M6, onto the M74, and have room for 2/3 passengers. So, Andy, if you are still interested you can either fly to Glasgow, Manchester, or Liverpool and I'll be able to pick you up en route (sort of) 8) .
Once the dates are settled we need to decide a location in the Trossachs - my initial suggestion would be Balmaha on the shores of Loch Lomond (about 17 miles from Glasgow).
Bill - nice appearance on Question Time on the old BBC - a good opening question too! :)
Get back to me soon,
Cheers,
Barry

I've checked with the BOSS and the best weekend for me is 23/24 October ...
Should be a go-er. What are we going to talk about :?: :D :D

I was more thinking you'd pick me up on the way past. Anyway we'd look far classier turning up in your Jag than my Mondeo :D

Alright I can't be there but, since my roots are Scottish how about someone grabbing up a handfull of Scottish highland dirt while someone else takes a picture of that action. Mail it to me and in return I will send a sample of pieces of rubber, commonly know as "marbles" from either the Brickyard 400 or the Indy 500, if that would be an acceptable trade.
Any takers? And no RFM you can't send me a handful of Portland dirt for that trade LOL Scottish Highland dirt only.

Indy,
My brother-in-law is Scottish. Has a farm, but I'll not tell you where. He wears the Morrison plaid every weekend and even pipes. He has trod all over the homestead so in theory, the dirt is Scottish. I'll send you a bucket. Sound good?

Just giving this a bump. October is just around the corner, and I for one have done bugger all about sorting myself out. The Trussocks seem favourite, but N Wales or the lakes could easily be substituted.
Can we have a quick re-visit to see who is interested and start to sort the logistics.
Not trying to step on toes here, if stuff is in train olease let me know.

Hi Neil,
Just about to fly off to Kos - only just noticed your post. I think that the most we were expecting to gather was about half a dozen but it appears that the interest has waned somewhat.
Ireturn on 14th October but would be unavailable (shiftwork and camera club judging) until the last weekend in October (30th and 31st). Anyone interested in making it that weekend? We can determine the exact location nearer the time.

Enjoy Kos, I am sure I can drag Calis up there and I think sGu is interested, if we can tempt him away from Old Trafford. I will try and drum up some more enthusiasm whilst you are away. Dont turn up too brown and healthy looking otherwise I will head home pronto
