I'm adjusting over from film to my digital XTI. This is shot with the kit lens at 55mm, ISO 400 at 5.6 at 1/200 sec

cute cat but i think id rather see the whole cat since this isnt a closeup. and if can reshot, id like him in all grass without the dirt by his feet so the all green will really make him stand out from the background. nice shot!!

I have shots that have Ms. Morgan's (Named after Captain Morgan. The her brother is named General Mosby) kitty butt in it, but i enjoyed the framing in it personally. But I agree the dirt is a wee distracting.

Looks to me like you have a good focus on the eyes/whiskers.. and nice depth of field towards the rear of the image. Good job, cute kitty.. cats can at times be difficult to photograph.

That doesn't make any sense. The rear of the image is oof. Depth of field refers to the three dimensional space within which there is good focus. You may be referring to the quality of the oof area which is bokeh.

I think the other reviewer means that they like the shallow depth of field, which in effect is bokeh (a term I have never heard in 8 years of photo but quickly found in google).
Either way, compliments are much appreciated. Thank-you.

Yep Gurnie understood me perfectly ...... I like the way that DOF was used in the image. Yes I understand 'most' people call out of focus areas or even circles of confusion 'bokeh' these days. Guess I was feeling a tad old school when I wrote the post........ despite my youth lol.

I think that you are still mistaken. Bokeh has nothing to do with DOF. If you read a definition of bokeh DOF is not mentioned. Bokeh is used to describe the quality, good or bad, of OOF areas of an image. Regardless of deep or shallow DOF, an image generally has OOF areas which can be described as having good or bad bokeh. I say generally because a very wide lens focused at a short hyperfocal distance can have virtually everything in focus.

Bokeh is used to describe the quality, good or bad, of OOF areas of an image. This is correct. Getting back on track, ;)
As for the image, I feel that the only failing it has is lack of a good focal point and contrast - which can be fixed with 5 minutes of photoshop.
Keep up the good work.

Nice pic! I guess I would say it seem's a little bright to me. Cat pupils are always interesting, and bright light makes them go away. The fur has nice color and texture, and it's possible that a more even lighting would show that off better.
