question about bounce flash and zooming head

Perhaps the words I am using above arent quite precise, hopefully you know what I am talking about.

Anyways, by default on my 420ex flash when it is facing the ceiling the head is @ 50mm. Wouldn't it make more sense for the flash to zoom all the way out, thereby providing the largest chance for more light to hit the ceiling?

Or am I missing something?

I've tried it on numerous zoom settings and found it made no real noticeable difference.
