View Full Version : Saying goodbye :(
J.A.F. Doorhof
8th of June 2007 (Fri), 02:23
With pain in my heart (and joy) I have to say goodbye to my friends on photography on the net.
After waiting for a long time on the new 1DsIII and after testing several times with MF cameras I decided that I wanted to make the switch to the MF system.
The choice has been the Mamiya 645 AFD/II with the new ZD digital back (22MP).
There for I can't post pictures anymore on this forum because it's no Canon.
I will of course keep the 5D for my other activities like live shows, sports and birding etc.
I have had a blast over here, and loved to read all the positive remarks about my work, never thought I would leave the Canon camp because I loved and still love the cameras.
However the DOF/Dynamic Range and sheer quality of the MF fits my work much better I believe.
Feel free to drop by on my site whenever you want, the galleries are updated app. twice per week.
Greetings,
Frank

You're leaving the forum because you think you can't post pictures that arn't done on a Canon?

Ouch. What's this place going to do without you and your beautiful photos? Hate to see you and your work go so I guess I'll just have to check it out and keep up with you on other places. 22mp. hmmmm hmmmmm hmmm. Good luck for sure.

Of course you can continue to post photos here. It is only the equipment forums that are Canon specific. Everything else is open to any brand.

I'm really happy for you to be upgrading to such an awesome camera! I also sad to see you go! Your awesome with a camera!
But i don't see why you actually need to leave POTN! I cannot name them off the top of my head, but there are plenty of NIKON users on here posting and commenting like the rest of us! They don't get any bushwah(my made-up word that means being harassed/made fun of/get crap) about using a different brand either! I say STAY here along with joining a MF club!

Besides, when people start getting all "I've got more MP than you", those in the know will just say "Have you met Frank?. . . . "
Anyway, it will be really interesting to see if at small sizes there is a difference between the quality you can get with digital MF and DSLRs, or if it's just when you start to blow up that the differences become clear.

Just one thing ... are you totally out of your mind to even considering not continuing to post here ???
We will certainly love to keep looking at your pics, and gasping in astonishment at your new images (like before, with your ole' Canon gear).

Frank,
It's been discussed internally now, and the ruling is clear.
You my friend do not have permission to leave this forum! ;)
You can't leave, your not allowed!
Seriously though, Frank has been @ POTN for a long time, he's seen it grow exponentially in those years, a growth that has only been outshown by Franks own growth in skill, talent, and success.
If you look hard enough, you'll find Franks first "duck shots" here,. and now look at him!
I'm very interested in continuing to watch you grow Mr. Doorhof, as you turn this new page in your ever evolving career.

Frank, I've been admiring your photos for years both on this forum and others and would miss you very much. You're always so helpful and don't mind spending time with us explaining your techniques and for that, I'm grateful. Plus, your photos are truly breathtaking and stand as an inspiration to us all. They are always well thought out, impeccably arranged and composed, and presented with dignity.
I would miss you and I'm sure hundreds of others here would. I just hope you'll grace these pages with your new camera's output but I don't see how they can get better but knowing you, they will.

As a compete amateur in this complex field of photography, there are a number of people I look for in these forums, for ideas and direction. One of those happens to be your good self.
Personally I don't give a hoot what gear you use, all I know is this forum will be that bit poorer for not having your input.

Frank, your work is inspirational, and as already said you are always very helpful.
Its so nice that someone in your position "bothers" to share technique, critique and technical advice, you have given me good advice on several occasions. I envy your new set up, but am pleased for you, as I know you will continue to provide spectacular images.
Stick around at the POTN, but I also wish very best of luck for you in your future, you are going all the way, and it couldn't happen to a nicer bloke.

I already decided to stay :D
About the noise of the Mamiya.
The Mamiya has more noise over 200ISO than the Canon that's 100% true.
HOWEVER the Mamiya was build for studio work and other work that needs absolutly noise free operation at ISO50-100.
At ISO50 and 100 the pictures are 100% noise free.

I was just shocked that the noise is much worse at 400 on there than my crappy XT. I'm not saying that it's bad at all, I was just surprised. Those are some amazing photos in the reviews and threads on your forum. Once I saw your studio work with it it's easy to see why it's so much better than slr's for that stuff, so much better. And man, that color range is just amazing. o.0 I'd get one in a heart beat.. too bad I can't even afford to upgrade to a 30d though =\

Glad to see your hanging around. Your work always inspires and challenges. I went the Hassy route, and haven't been sad in the least. The work from the Mamiya looks wonderful.
