Photography has been my hobby since before digital cameras and I have been in the marketing business since college. A couple of weeks ago I saw someone on another forum show some of his work from a website called www.myphotoelements.com. The images were very cool and I have been thinking about it ever since. In no way does it replace good photography but it is a very cool way to create an image for an ad without having to hire an expensive professional photographer or buy a stock image. And, to be honest, I really have had a lot of fun just creating "photo art" totally from my imagination. I think that as long as someone tells the viewers upfront that it is a creation rather than an original image then no harm is done. Art is art.
Anyway, here's some of my creations (albeit with limited Photoshop skills). ;)

These do create some pretty incredible images....... but it kind of feels like cheating?

Is it really cheating? You are creating art. What difference does it make whether you first saw it and used a camera to photograph, then manipuilate it to how you liked it, vs. seeing it in your mind, then manipulating it to how you like it?
Photography has it's place, but I think so does this.
One thing is for sure. You really should divulge that it is a total creation, rather than a photograph.
This is cool!

It's art is what it is, it's not photgraphy. The way I see it, photgraphy is about composition and arrangement, about capturing a specific moment in time so that it won't be forgotten.
This is more about creating pleasing pictures, gret for marketing and creating very nice wall images.
Now don't get me wrong, I love Phoroshop for enhancement and combining pictures that I have taken. But, if I read this site correctly, this is about creating a picture from what they provide you, not what you take with your camera.
But, they do provide you with the subjects to create pretty cool images.

That looks like tintern abbey in 3. Am I correct?
Really nice images. I understand that some may not think it is photography, but hey, let's face it. Even the pro's will do stuff like this. the difference is that they have an editing staff to do it for them while they take the pictures used.
Also, to get good images like thes you have to have good photographs to work with.
Well done.

#1 and #3 are Awesome.
I also agree with shesgotthepic that you have to start with good photo's.

Very nice series, well done with the art work. Appart from #'2, you would be able to tell they have been manipulated and so it comes into the realm of photographic artwork for me.
If you have the skill to do it well then why not? Just don't pass it off as a photo ;-)
Any more?

Thank you all for the nice comments. I really do appreciate you taking the time to post your feelings and thoughts.
rammy,
Yeah, I have a lot more. I'll only add a few more to this post. I'd love to post them all as I've had such a great time making them but I'm sure the forum would not appreciate it. ;)

Oh, gee whiz and thanks a lot, LeoR! Now I'm only THIS far away from dropping my next paycheck on P-shop because the software that came with my camera (Digital Photo Professional) seems soooooooooooooo inadequate. So when Greta jumps my back for dropping the bucks I'm gonna send her over to your house! And yes, she has a passport.
By the way, your creations are simply awesome. Outstanding examples of how photography can be a tool to create eye-catching art.

Great pictures with a lot of creative imagination, but not 100% photography. I do understand that most photographs have been helped along the way to improve the final print. But the good thing is we are all people with our own likes and dislikes. If you like it "GO FOR IT"
Having said that I do like your "Pictures"
Cheers. Ken.

haha, just wait until everyone discovers this and uses the same backgrounds and animals as you.
Good luck looking like everyone else. :D

Specs,
Did you get your Photoshop yet? You don't need full blown PS to do images like these, by the way. Photoshop Elements is all you need and it only costs around $89. I HOPE that's not your entire ""next paycheck." LOL ;)

#1 & 2 ROCK. As long as you are using images that you took I say ROCK ON...It starts getting a little wierd if your using other folks stuff but as long as you have permission
Check out the work of Jerry Uelsmann. He was doing this in the camera, maniputaing negatives and blending images in the darkroom long before digital and its art....
