Welcome to the forums!

I sometimes use a circular polarizer filter. It's good for making the sky more blue or to remove bright reflections from surfaces such as water. Nice for landscape photography. Otherwise I don't use any filters - you can do most tricks that you can achieve with filters in your favorite image editing program.

In the compact digicam world, people talk in terms like "8x zoom". That means that the difference between the shortest and longest focal length of your zoom lens is, for example, 8x. Usually people don't refer to lenses in the SLR world with those terms, but if you want to compare, the Digital Rebel kit lens, which has a zoom range of 18-55 mm, is 55/18 = 3x zoom.

If you have a fixed focal length lens, like 400mm, you can't say it's "N x zoom". A fixed focal length lens doesn't zoom at all.

Welcome !
UV filters !!! I use them mostly for protection(especially if you don't like hoods). And they serve well. For me, at least they did. For example, as soon as I bought my 50mm f/1.8 (and a UV haze filter) I started shooting around the house to check out the lens... for some odd, reason, by brother throws a penny at me.... BOOM hits the filter. Thank God I had it on

FILTERS:

Yes.. get yourself a "UV" filter for all your lenses to protect them from damage.

Then get a Circular polarizer.. if you have a few lenses get the polarizer in the largest diameter you intend to use it with and then get step up rings for you smaller diameter lenses.

400mm Vs. 10X Zoom:

The two don't really translate.. as the "X" is a ratio of what ever the widest the lens goes.

Also.. for a digicam.. the "mm" rating is an "equivelent" so to get a matching "equivelent" from your 300D.. you need to multiply all "mm' times 1.6

Your average 10X zoom digicam will be 32mm-320mm.. somtimes 28-280mm "equivelent"

Thus with the 300D and a 400mm lens times 1.6 = 640mm.. or roughly double the magnification of any "10X" digicam :)

"UV" for protection.
Circular polarizer for more saturation & toning down reflections.

It seems that HOYA does not have a web site :(
I think TIFFEN is a good choice. You can find some cheaply offers at eBay.

Do I understand you right if you mean you are looking for an illegal PDF version of the book Photoshop CS for Digital Photographers (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0735714118/qid=1085504329/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-3405470-7186538?v=glance&s=books)? Just order the book from Amazon or buy it in a book store.
