^haha! Told you!

Ok, I'm going to start posting her with my non macro version because the other archive is dead and I feel lonely.

My cousin's wedding. These were shot JPEG by accident so I edited them as I would RAW shots because I'm stubborn. Luckily I wasn't the only photographer.

First lens with my 20D and it was a match made in heaven. Works great for portraits.

Have a looksie! Pretty much browse my site and WA shots are with it. Most EXIF is there.

Exactly! I will never get rid of it unless Sigma comes out with a HSM/OS version for $600. But I'll buy that one first and test it before I sell this one. I must have gotten the beta macrp because it's awesomely sharp.

So if Im understanding this right, this Sigma is cheaper and better..? No way...

I think both are VERY close, and one could be better (sharper) then the other based on if you got a good copy or not. I do believe the Sigma EX build quality is better then the Tamron (and probably Canon 17-55 as well) but that only matter so much in the end. My Sigma 24-60 focuses quietly and accuratly, not HSM fast but it's good. If the 18-50 is as good as my 24-60 I would consider getting it for the wider angle (and I'd like it to have HSM/OS as well). Likely, however.. I will end up with a Canon 17-55 if I do upgrade, cause they are amazing and I haven't heard of quality problems with them.

Here are a couple of pics from me. Just got the lens back from calibration. I haven't owned it for long so I don't have very good pictures yet.
Anyway, today at the botanicalk garden.

I agree regarding one being better than the other coming down to the quality of the actual copy.
I bought both the Tamron 17-50 and the Sigma 18-50 Macro at the same time, tested them both rigorously, the Sigma proved to be a better copy so I kept it, sent the Tamron back.
Sigma: better build quality; softer, more pleasant focus noise, better sharpness in my copy's case, better macro.
Still, I had to have it calibrated TWICE, second time I sent my camera to Sigma too, and was without it for two weeks, ouch!

But seems to be working good now.

I never plan on upgrading because HSM and IS is overrated and way overcharged on that lens. If I found a used one for $700, maybe. But no more for that lens.

Yeah i would be finding a used one as well. No way I'm paying $900 for a non-L lens.

I think you'd be better off just sending it to Sigma than returning it. I think your +20 looks pretty good, especially considering the distance to subject.

mr.lemarc
8th of March 2009 (Sun), 23:31
well amazon just informed they dont have this lens in stock anymore, only through different sellers.

I have until early April 3rd I think to decide (which is why I like Amazon, BH has same price but only 15 day return policy)

Anyways, I agree that it looks good at +20 -- its mainly the thought of a brand new lens requiring the maximum adjustment on my 50D.

I think you'd be better off just sending it to Sigma than returning it. I think your +20 looks pretty good, especially considering the distance to subject.

I noticed you have a lot of sigma lenses in your gear list -- hows your experience been with their quality control. Also, where did you purchase most of your sigma lenses?

Tony-S
8th of March 2009 (Sun), 23:44
I get my lenses from B&H or Adorama. I think I have one or two from Sigma4Less. The only issues I've had were the 50-150 mk I where it front focused just a bit at 150mm and inside 8 ft (and only noticeable at f/2.8 upon pixel peeping), and the new 24-70 f/2.8 HSM, which front focuses a few mm. It is also only noticeable if you are very close to the subject (which isn't in my typical shooting distance) and is gone by f/4. I have my 5D set to +20 for it as well. I will likely send it in to see if Sigma can get it a bit closer - I don't like living on the edge, if you know what I mean. ;)

I've also had the 17-70, 18-50 f/2.8 macro and 10-20 f/4-5.6 and none had any problems. The 18-50 f/2.8 macro is a very nice lens.

Exactly...I don't like living on the edge either. I figure since I have the opportunity right now to return and have another chance at getting a "better" lens, I might as well take advantage.

Anyways, I may just return to Amazon and order it from BH.

And I agree that the 18-50mm f/2.8 is such a great lens, hence me going through the trouble to make sure I get one that I am happy with.

Well.. I sent my 18-50 in for calibration to Sigma and after getting it back, my zoom only goes from 18-24mm.

Anyone know if there's anything I can do? I've tried flipping the lock switch, but that doesn't do anything.

I'm going to call Sigma tomorrow because my gut feeling is I'm going to have to send it back to Sigma to get fixed.

Other than the zoom issue, the lens seems fine. Bah. :(

How the heck did you get it to Sigma and back so quickly. I sent in my 24-70 2.8 on the 7th. They forwarded it to Phoenix. Mind you I'm in FL and shipped to NY. Got on the phone w/ C.R.I.S in Phoenix to push the repair. They were responsive and got it in and out in less than a week, but then shipped it back to me ground. After 8 days with UPS and a total of 22 days, I've finally got my lens back yesterday.

... and your pic looks great!

You know, when I first sent my (three) lenses to them for calibration, it took a month for me to get them back. I'm surprised how quickly they turned it around sending only one for repair. They received it on 21st and I got it back on the 28th. Exactly 7 day turnaround.

Got this lens this week despite my local camera store and my friend telling me I should get the Tamron in this same range. After getting it and my friend playing with it, my friend likes that the zoom ring is stiffer than his Tamron.

I like it also and the fact that it twists the same direction as a Canon lens is a definate plus.

Here are just some uninteresting shots of the fence near my apartment. Straight out the camera, adjusted in RAW for brightness and that's it.

I like this lens. It's pretty damned sharp even at 2.8 and the macro is nice although I don't see myself using it that often.

Some slight vignetting at 18mm which is a little evident in the first picture but nothing a little post processing can't fix. The lens is pretty loud after being used to Canon's USM lenses but I'm not shooting in places where silence is paramount so it doesn't really matter.

I just got the Canon 500D with the 18-55 kit. Was considering getting the 50mm/f1.8 II "Nigty-Fifty", but friend of mine is changing some of his gear and offered to sell me this lens. Although this is little more expensive, I assume this would be a lot better than the kit and the nifty-fifty, and kind of compine both of them. So basicly I could sell my kit and just go with this one. What do you think?

Tony-S
7th of July 2009 (Tue), 15:49
Make sure your friend is selling you the macro version, which is a newer design and optically superior to the non-macro version. I don't know about calling it "better" than the 50mm f/1.8 - at f/2.8 the 50mm will be sharper (and until several more stops down). Such is the nature of primes.

_aravena

Man, the non is as good (at least mine is) as the macro. So it really doesn't matter as long as your not paying macro price for non.

That isn't necessarily true. My 18-50 macro was sharper wide open than my nifty 50 was at f/2.8, it also focused more accurately. I think my 50mm came into it's own at f/5.6 but it wasn't soo much sharper. I pretty much never mounted it after I got the Sigma. The bokeh of the Sigma is also nicer imo. Now, with that said, obviously some 50mm f/1.8 lenses will perform better and some worse and the same can probably said for the Sigmas.

Is this lens worth a get or just a not bad lens?

It's not the best lens if that's what you're asking, but for the money it's a great lens. I bought it because it's sharp, fast, has a pretty useful range(albeit a bit short), and it focuses very closely. I don't think there are any comparable lenses that share all of it's qualities. If you don't care about the close focus you can wait for the new HSM OS version to come out or go for the Tamron 17-50(not the new VC) as it's a good performer as well. Or if you don't need a lens as wide you can go for a 24-70.

Compared to the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM and the new Tamron VC, how does this lens compare (macro version). It is available here for about the same price as the Tamron VC, while the new Sigma is quite a bit more expensive. Should I just shell out on the newer Sigma, the Tamron with VC or this?

Tony-S
26th of October 2010 (Tue), 14:28
By all accounts, the order from best to worst seems to be Sigma 17-50 OS HSM >> Tamron 17-50 ~= Sigma 18-50 > Tamron 17-50 VC.

Hmm...thanks for your response. I've found a seller offering Tamron's 17-50 (non-VC) and might just opt for it from a price point of view (its the cheapest of all 4, 3rd party lenses available in the used market). I wish I could afford the Sigma, but for the price range that its at (new), I can find a used Canon 17-55.

From what I'm seeing, a used EF-S 17-55 is ~$200 more than the Sigma.

Agree
Sigma = $660
Used 17-55 = $850
New 17-55 = $990

cant find any used sigmas... :)

I've seen the 18-50 macro go for $300 and less used. The only thing the old version has over the OS is Macro really, but its ability to close focus was one of the main reasons I bought the lens.

Great thread people. I have been considering this lens and the Sigma 17-70. I have the Tamron 28-75 and like it but find it not wide enough on my 50D. Anyone used the 18-50 and 17-70 and have a prefferance? The extra reach of the 17-70 is tempting.

If you're referring to the 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 (and not the 17-70 f/2.8-4 OS), then optically the lenses are about the same. I had them both and did a side-by-side somewhere here on the forums. I kept the 18-50 for its constant f/2.8 aperture - just a personal choice on my part.

Yes Matt, Price and 2.8. I am not a pro, and don't have a lot of income. I can sell the Tamron to pay for one of the lenses I mentioned. The 18-50 takes the same filters as the Tammy, so that's a factor. I do have a good 67mm CPL and a Cokin filter system with 67mm adaptor ring, so I'm set up there.

Damn, i was researching for a week, debating between tamron 17-50, sigma 17-50 f2.8 and canon 17-40mm f4L. Decided to give the tammy a try, when i was about to put the trigger, bann this lens came out to my sight.
I need some suggestion from u guys =D had anybody use the tamron 17-50mm before, and what do u think between this lens and the tammy ?

P.S. actully there r 2 version of this lens, 2 discontinued, one with HSM.

Good conditon:
Low price: $250
Average: $275-$300
High: Higher than $300

They dont make this lens still so youll have to look around for a used one. Took me a while but i found one. Check on this forum, eBay, and Craigslist. Make sure when and if you buy its the 18-50 f/2.8 Macro.

That's it then ....I am on the hunt for one.

You won't regret it! Mine arrived yesterday. Set the camera up on the tripod with my kit lens and snapped a picture. Changed the lens out to my new Sigma 18-50, same subject, same settings, and 100% noticeable IQ difference. The no HSM (same as USM) is not an issue at all, I honestly don't notice it when I have it or don't. I hand held some low light shots at 2.8 and my shots were still clear...thankfully (was a little scared about not having IS.) I'm very happy with this lens, my copy is tack sharp. I can't wait to really put it to use on Sunday.

BTW: I rented the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 and loved it, but after some careful consideration, I decided that its price tag is not justifiable at this point in time. That's why I started browsing and picked this lens out of the others. Was between this and a NON VC Tamrom, but I liked the idea of the slight macro capabilities.
