View Full Version : 1.4 TC on a 28-300L...?

I have Canon's 28-300L zoom, and while I'd like something longer, I can't afford it just yet.

The list of lenses that the 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters fit, does not include the 28-300, and it's clear why; the rear element of the lens extends all the way to the mounting face, and would obviously crash into the extended inner lens element of the teleconverter.

Now, that said, I'm wondering if the converter will, in fact, fit and work, if the lens is kept extended. In other words, if I extend the lens to 300mm, and lock the barrel with the tension ring, then attach the converter and mount it, will it function? Focus, power the IS, etc?

Heck, to say nothing of actually autofocusing, will the lenses be in the correct orientation to actually allow focusing?

Anyone out there with both a (Canon) teleconverter, preferably a 1.4, and a 28-300 that could try it (carefully!) and let me know?

I'm not too worried about getting the teleconverter anyway, as I eventually plan to get the 400 5.6 (and maybe one day the 500) as well as the 70-200 2.8, but if it won't work with the 28-300, I'll hold off on it for the time being.

Thanks.
Doc.

Doc:
The 1D will AF your 28-300L with the 1.4xII because the limit on the 1D series is F8.
The 350D will AF with an extender up tp F5.6, which means, the instant you zoom past f4 you loose AF.
My 35-350L is basically the same as your lens and I tested it with both extenders on all my bodies.
IQ wise, I don't know, I never needed it.
