My HP has died. Well that means a need a new printer. I want a text printer (I have a i950 but the ink costs too much for normal printing.) What do you suggest? I have been having problems with 2 things I bought from HP in the last 6 months and had to return them so no HP. I looked at Dell but I would want to be able to get ink at the store if I needed it fast. What does Canon have? Anything else? Thanks!

Why not use the i950 for photos and get an inexpensive laser printer for text? This would greatly reduce your cost per sheet for text and black/greyscale, while leaving you with a printer that does photos well and relatively inexpensively.

For the laser, Brother makes a couple of inexpensive models that are also low on consumables (toner/drums). HP has a low end laser that is OK too.

The Dell printers are branded Lexmark printers. Lexmark has the reputation for having one of the highest per copy costs of any brand. As such though, you should be able to get ink at just about any place that sells Lexmark ink cartridges.

Hmmm. Laser... I kinda like that idea. What about color laser printers. I would want to print color text too.

They are coming down in price, but you still have multiple toner cartridges/tanks and your cost per print will be much higher on everything, not just the color prints. Unless you do a lot of color text, I would stick with a Black laser and either print the limited colored text on the i950 or have a copy center (Kinkos, Staples, Office Depot, etc.) do the laser color output.

I do a lot of color text so I guess no laser.

You can still do it, it just depends upon the depth and willingness of your wallet :D  :D
