I'd upgrade that 50 1.8 to the 50 1.4, and grab a 4gig Ultra II.

Having only a 50mm is really limiting. I'd spend the money on a Tamron 17-50 2.8 or something along those lines (Sigma 17-70, Tamron 28-70, etc)
Granted, you would need to find them used...

$300 can get you:
Sigma 70-300 HSM APO DG or Sigma DG 500 Super flash
+ Kata H-14 bag
+ 2 gb CF Card

Depending on need, I'd consider:
430EX with a Stofen diffuser and rechargeable batteries.
A sigma 28mm f1.8, nice lens.
Sigma 70-300, if you want cheap telephoto lens that's good.
Some CPL filters/Grip/extra batteries.
Used 85mm f1.8 does sound good too.

A great flash such as the 430EX will really be important for people photography. You can get one for $235.00 or so. It's one of the best flashes made and will be all you need!

I'd open a savings account with it and add more money to it. Buy quality equipment initially so you don't have to repurchase later. Good things come to those who wait. In the meantime, learn to use that 50mm lens. :)

Tamron 28-75. If you want a flash and are on a budget, look at the sigma flashes, the EF 500-DG Super is a great flash for a fraction of the canon flashes.

Great suggestions so far. Question to the OP, "What other accessories do you have right now in the way of memory, flash, bags?
Depending on how you shoot, prioritize your needs. If you want to stay with primes, the 50 1.4 or 85 1.8 are must haves, IMO for consumer grade lenses. If you shoot indoors a lot and need a good flash, the on board flash is not enough, the 430EX is quite a capable little flash (so wonderfully built). But if you have never had a zoom lens and want something to take around and try, the Tamron is the best choice for now.
I was in your situation when I first started, only having a few hundred dollars to spend at a time and thinking that was a lot of money and scrapping those few dollars up was hard enough. I've learned since that everyone has their limits and their budgets. If you are serious about learning your camera, buy one good lens at a time and work with it, learn it to it's fullest. And then save for something else.

Take 300, put it on a long shot, take your winnings and buy a 24-105 L.
Buy a used kit lens and other stuff.

Seriously, what about a canon EFS 18-55 Kit lens ($135) and a sigma 55-200 for ($149)- with S&H you're around $300, and it gives you a lot of focal length to play with while you save for a 24-105L. Prices are from B&H.
They may get snubbed by other posters, but ANY (working) lens can produce a good picture. My wife's a photojournalist, and some of her bestest are with a kit lens.

Well, if you're just looking to complete a kit, perhaps the Sigma 18-50 f/3.5-5.6 (http://www.sigma4less.com/sess/utn15466c17b4e3bcb/shopdata/0010_Lenses/0010_Zoom/0010_Digital+Zoom/product_details.shopscript?article=0490_Sigma%2BZo om%2BWide%2BAngle-Normal%2B18-50mm%2Bf%3D26slash%3D3B3%3D252E5-5%3D252E6%2BDC%2BAutofocus%2BLens%2Bfor%2BCanon%2B Digital%2BEOS%2B%3D28SG1850F35CA%3D29) and the Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO Macro (http://www.sigma4less.com/sess/utn15466c17b4e3bcb/shopdata/0010_Lenses/0010_Zoom/0040_Tele+Zoom/product_details.shopscript?article=0500_Sigma%2BZo om%2BTelephoto%2B70-300mm%2Bf%3D26slash%3D3B4-5%3D252E6%2BAPO%2BDG%2BMacro%2BAutofocus%2BLens%2B for%2BCanon%2BEOS%2B%3D28SG70300F4ADCA%3D29). You'd have enough left over to buy the Tamrac Superlight 5 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=2691510#post2691510) to carry it all.
Of course, if you're planning to really get into it, then I'd start saving up a bit more to get faster lenses.
