Great kid who threw his first no hitter ever. He a rising senior in college who is staying with us while playing summer ball . He had 15 k's in the game. The local newspaper wanted to know if I would give them my four best shots of him for their article, which i gladly did.

Excellent and congratulations! The first pics is my favorite -- is it the one the newspaper ran?

i really like #2 (the one with the american flag) I like the angle and the focus is precise. too bad you have some sort of warehouse in the background, but there is nothing you can do about that

How much did they pay you for your photos?

I like #2 because of the flag as well.

yes, number one is the one in the paper. The building in the background in the middle school behind the field. No pay for the photo. Not sure how to approach the papers for that. I usally just take the photos for the fun of it.

I don't know if this is the norm with most papers, but I was told there's a form I have to fill out for photos I just had published in the local rag. A writer asked me to send one in since I was shooting for the heck of it and the papers photographer had a day off, he didn't mention pay. I asked one of the photographers and he said he'd get me a form, best thing to do is just call up the sports editor and ask if there's any pay for photo usage. Seems low, but the local paper is $15. But they used multiple photos and also pay for mileage.
#1 is definately my favorite, #2 I like except would crop the umps backside out as much as possible.

If your local paper can't send a photographer to the game, why shouldn't they pay you for your work? Your photo is adding to the value of their publication, isn't it? (the answer of course, is YES;))

I agree that the papers should pay, but sometimes the only way to get access to the papers is to shoot for free. I have been shooting for free for a little while, but I do get called for the PRO gigs when they need a spare or for relief.
"Free" keeps you in their good books, but be careful not to get taken advantage of (does that sentence make sense??). Free doesn't mean you have to make a loss. If there are costs associated with an assignment, make sure that they will be passed on before you agree. Free doesn't mean you are shooing all weekend for the paper.
For me, "Free" meant I shot what was best for my development/experience, and if the paper wanted it then they could have it.
Just a thought....

They had one of their photographers there that I know and he asked if I had some of the pitcher after the game. Apparently he didn't and since it was a no hitter they need some. Seeing how he is staying with us for the summer I was shooting mostly him. Up to this game he was a conditonal player and it could have been his last game. It 's the clubs only no hitter in its young existance and secured his place for the rest of the summer.

These were right out of the camera except for resizing for here. I think you're right on the cropping of the second one.
