Had a go at trying some portraits today - a couple of flash units - 580 ex on the camera and a 550ex as slave back lighting. used a drop screen and a very unwilling little boy (Ethan my 3 year old son)

I agree. Also, you might try a crop or composition that is not so centered.

Turn up the flash, it should really make it pop.
