Lens for Rebel XTI

Just bought Canon Rebel XTi with standard 18-55 kit lens. I will be using the camera to take football game shots for a team website, as well as the ususal family photos and yearbook photos. I saw the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens on sale under $200 -- would this be a good lens for me to start with??
I have been using a Panasonic Lumix FZ8 so this is a whole new ballgame for me.

you'd be better off with an image stabilzed lens for that length. the 70-300 IS would be a VG choice but it ain't cheap.

there's also a 75-300 version with IS that would be cheaper but at the cost of image quality.

for starters i'd really be looking at the 70-300 IS but the price may be more than you'd want to pay.

Just make sure it's the APO model. Might be the best in you budget.

Wow, thanks for s lot of info so quickly. Right now budget is a big concern, but have a few events coming up and would like to get used to the camera before football season starts.
I think I will try the Sigma and if I use it often, I will definitely buy the Canon IS.
Again, thanks so much for the suggestions. If you can think of any other lenses that you recommend for a newbie please let me know!

My DH pointed out to me that we have a few night football games under the lights this season -- hmmm, which lens for that, if 70-300 is kind of slow? I am standing on the sidelines while shooting the games.
