I took my MkIII out Sat. for the first time. It was more of get acquainted experience than anything else since I am stepping up from my 20D. What I did like was that I used evaluative metering on this. If I had done so with the 20d (wouldn't think of it) it would have been hotter then it already is.

Wow what a shot! I'd die to get that camera but just can't justify it. Hell I can't work the 20D I already have!

Great shot Mike. I'll just have to go on being a Mk3 drooler.
The 30D has Evaluative metering. Set it with the top buttons. It's the icon with a broken circle around a dot in the middle. While your at it, Set the On switch to the second On mark so you can set Exposure Compensation with the rear wheel. ;)

Impressive capture using the Evaluative metering mode and I just wander of the outcome if you had used Partial on this one.

Your 30D has it, but don't expect it to work as well as this. ;)

So should i not use the metering with my 30d ? What exactly does the metering system do?

I think the results would have been the same in that the subject and the BG are clearly different in color and texture.

I don't know. I have taken thousands of eagle pictures over the past few years and have seldom been able to properly expose their heads using evaluative.

In the basic modes the camera automatically selects evaluative. If you use P,EV,TV or manual you have a choice of evaluative, partial, spot or center weighted which you have to select yourself. More info is found on p.81 of your owners manual.

Great shot Blue, we're in the same position I'm moving from 20D to MarkIII as well and spent most of this past weekend trying to learn it. I'm certainly not there yet. :) But I am beginning to love this camera.
