If you want to use another setting than Auto White Balance, you should set the correct setting for the type of light your are photographing under. For example, use the Tungsten (light bulb) setting when you're making photos indoors, with light from normal light bulbs. If you use the Daylight (sun) setting indoors, everything will look yellow. There's also a Flash setting for white balance. Light from the flash is almost like daylight, it's not as yellow as light from light bulbs. You can also set a custom white balance if you want really accurate colors. Look it up in the manual of your Digital Rebel.

If you're using only light from outside the window, the window itself may be filtering the light. Use a white or grey card and use CUSTOM white balance. Also the paint on the walls may well be reflecting. (Yellow paint reflects yellow, thus light bouncing off it will be heavy in yellow - again, custom white balance...)

If you're mixing light sources (window light, plus room light) you will have to work hard to get a pleasing mix of lights. You must evaluate which light should be 'wrong' do you want the window light to be cold, or do you want the room light to be warm...

Shoot RAW and adjust WB in Photoshop.
