Hi -
My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon and may end up in Greece or Hawaii(Maui).
I will be bringing my XTi, but not sure what to bring for lenses? I don't want to bring a ton of equipment to worry about.
I have the kit lens, 50mm 1.8 and an 80-200 canon zoom.
I am willing to buy a lens and was thinking of the 28-105L as the only lens I bring. I do possibly have access to a 70-200F4L from a friend.
Any thougths from people who have traveled to either of these locations?
Thanks,
Steve

i have been to Greece and if i ever go back there, i will pick up a wide angle for sure (10-22 or something like that). if you don't have a need for ultra wide, the 24-105L would be just perfect for that trip. honestly, i wouldn't worry to much about a telephoto but if you can borrow one, great.

Maui:
The kit lens works very nice, there are tons of bright objects durring the day. I also used my 100-300mm to shoot people in the water. Also You MUST do the road to Hana! Buy a CD-tour from one of the gas stations near the airport. Drive around (takes all day but is worth it.
Link to my pics, some with crappy P&S some with my 20D:

Good luck and let us know how it goes :D

Thanks,
The same friend also has the 10-22, but not sure he would let me borrow it. The 70-200 is rugged and I don't think he worries much about it, but the 10-22 is not built the same, so I bet he would be a little concerned.
10-22 and 24-105 would be a killer combo. Hmmmm how to pull it off.

I took the 15-30, 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 and used them all. A lot! 15-30 on the 5D's about the same as the 10-22 or 10-20 on the XTi and you need something really wide like that or a lot of creative work if you want photos of any of the major monuments (say, the Parthenon) without thousands of tourists in the picture. All the museums we were in had staff in every room just (it seemed) to say "No flash", so the f/2.8 of the 24-70 and the 70-200IS was almost essential. Some of the temples are fenced off far enough away that you'll want 200 mm; the 24-105 won't be long enough.

I think a Canon 17-55, Tamron 17-50, Sigma 18-50/17-70 may give you the most bang for the bucks. If you are mainly on a vacation, and not a photo vacation, I'd probably just take one general purpose lens. The 24-105L on a cropped sensor is not wide enough for me with landscape shots. 17mm or so may be just wide enough to get by for me.

I'm in the same situation as you are.
Going to spend all of July in Greece for my honeymoon.
I have a 30D.
I'm bringing my 10-22mm for sure... I have no doubt I'll use it the most.
I have a Sigma 17-70 coming at the end of the week, so I'll decide then to either bring that, or my 50mm 1.4.
I never find myself wishing for a telephoto lens. I love shooting wide.
Still deciding if I will want a walkaround lens, or a low light/sharp prime lens as my second lens. I could always use the on-camera flash...hmmm.
I have many relatives there that I want to shoot portraits of. My 50mm is my favorite portrait lens. I'll see how my new Sigma stacks up.
I don't want more than 2 lenses because
I'm also bringing an HD camcorder and a small tripod as well.

As like Bill and the OP, I too am heading to Greece for the entire month of July... The family will be taking a Greece cruise and will be porting at most of the islands there...
I'm still debating on which lens to bring... With my lens list below, I'm definately going to take the Tokie 12-24 and either the Tammy 28-75 2.8 or the 28-135 IS USM... Can't decide on those two yet... I like the reach of the 28-135, but I also like the constant 2.8 on the Tammy... Decision decisions... Moreover, I'm not sure I want to lug my 7-2 2.8L IS on the trip... Sheesh!!! The wifey's been there before and from her last outing she complained about lugging a heavy backpack when doing the land excursions... So she's telling me to pack light for my camera gear... DAMN DAMN DAMN!!! I want to bring it all, but I know I'll regret the weight on my back when we're walking around...
What do you guys/gals think?! XTi with grip, Tokie 12-24, and the 420EX Speedlite are for sure... I'll be using my Bogen 680B monopod as a hiking stick and something to set the camera on when I need to take those panny shots... The rest of my lens list is up for discussion... HELP HELP HELP!!!

I agree, I used the 24-105 in Greece and it was perfect. IS is important in the musuems because they do not allow flash. A 2.8 would not help, since a lot of them are pretty dark. The 50mm 1.8 would/might help here. You prob will not need a telezoom, unless you are taking pictures of girls on the beaches...
Here are my pics from my 10day stay in Athens, Mykonos and Santorini

If I had to bring one lens for a crop camera, it would be the 17-55 f/2.8 IS. Just got mine, and I really, really like it as an all purpose lens.
The 17 is decently wide, and the 55 is decently long. (Yes - I know 10-600 would be better, but for a crop camera this is the best we have IMO).
The IS will also help so much.
If I could add a 2nd lens, it would be the 10-22 as stated by others.
A 3rd lens - maybe a 70-200? But when I am traveling 1 or 2 lenses is usually all I want to deal with.
