View Full Version : Someone Got Ripped Off

I was perusing the marketplace sell forum last evening and went about two pages deep. One of our members got ripped off. The thread has been closed. I think that is a disservice to the other members who can learn a thing or two and be aware of warning signs before plunking down their hard earned money.

While I realize the thread was going on and on, and perhaps was not appropriate for the sell forum, it should not be closed but instead moved here for others' benefit.

As always, buyer beware. Personally, I'd only buy used from reputable sellers here, people who have a track record and feedback.

Be careful, folks.

That is so sad...I'm so thankful all transactions I've made have gone so smoothly! Only one mis hap and it was totally my fault- I put the wrong street name on the sellers envelope and it delayed payment about 3 weeks- I about had a heart attack! I was so afraid he was going to think I ripped him off!

Kathy the con? Never ;)

I just read the post and it is pretty sad. I think CDS gave the best advice on one of the pages to hopefully be able to avoid these sorts of things.

Sure hope that everything there gets sorted out and that the one responsible gets what is coming to him.

That stinks! It makes me sick to think about that. I couldn't take someones money and live with myself like that.

The thing that really stinks, is that its guys like him that give honest sellers a bad name! Within my first 10 posts here, I had a lens for sale. The buyer was a little weary, but sent me payment after I showed him I had valid feedback. I was at the UPS store the next morning shipping it out.

Call me "old school", but I believe in the whole "treat others as you would like to be treated" saying.

Even that "record" is of questionable value. I had a number of sales recently that went really very well, some of them to members with just a few posts . The only one I have been less than impressed with, in fact the payment for a lens I sold him is now a whole month overdue, is to a 2 year POTN veteran, with a goodly number of posts.

You know, I've never sold much equipment online. I mean I've advertised online (Craig's List) and sold in person, and I've always made sure the buyer got what he bargained for, but I've been wary of selling (or buying) online because of the trust issues. There are a number of people I would buy from here in a heart-beat (Kathy you're one of them), but it's hard to get feedback as a seller without a history, and most of the stuff I'm willing to sell, is fairly high value (like a 70-200 f/2.8L non-IS).

Out that person. Maybe that will embarass them into paying up.

Don't you think it's about time you revive that thread for me? You're a mod and no one can say a word about it when you do.

I'll be looking for it. :)

Oh, how's the 600mm going? I haven't seen any posts lately. Have I missed them? PM me links any time you post an image.

The 600 is sitting in its bunker waiting to be called into action. I really haven't had time to do any shooting lately. We've been pretty busy with necessary things, but it's ready.

As always, I'm the problem.

If you want to see something really nice, check this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=748063&postcount=1)out.

You made me bust out laughing, my friend. Touche.

Hey, how about reviving it. The least you can do.

I understand the thinking (though not the reasoning) of having a positive feedback thread but not one for people who have indeed done a disservice to fellow members. Maybe the way for such a list to become reality would be if there was a way for it to be researched by a Moderator who would make the decision of allowing the post, thus making sure that the post had merit rather than just someone ranting without validity. I know that his wont happen, and I know that I might be chided for even suggesting it, but in all honesty, why should someone who does this to someone here be allowed to do it again to someone else? Just my .02 worth.

Where we run into difficulties are those occasions where there's a genuine difference of opinions, or sometimes, just a personality conflict. Also, there are the cases where the story gets embellished for dramatic effect by someone hoping to engender a little sympathy in the forum to bring pressure on the other individual.

It is impossible for us as moderators to differentiate between legitimate grievances and posturing by unhappy buyers/sellers. All we can do is hope the participants will take all reasonable precautions to ensure they’re dealing with reputable parties. Unless there is clear, indisputable proof of a scam, we can’t take sides. That’s why we subscribe very strictly to the concept of caveat emptor (let the buyer beware).
