OK ... I'm slowly, but surely headed towards dSLR from being a happy G2 owner. I visit this forum A LOT and I've learned a lot from you all (I've also done some pretty messy drooling reading about your new MkII's). Now ... looking round the net I went to eBay and find a whole lot of 'Brand New Canon 10D' kit packages. They come with all sorts of stuff - bag, 512GB, tripods, etc. Plus 2 lenses: Sigma 100-300 f4.5-6.7 DL AF and 28-80 3.5-5.6 HF AF. All for around $1700. The eBay outfits - the few I looked at - are 47st Photo, DigitalSale, Shop Sunshine......
So what is going on here? Is this a scam of somekind? Is this possible? Or are the lenses impossibly useless?
I would appreciate your insights.

If you intend to buy from a reputable dealer.. don't use E-bay.. go to B&H or another of the user recomended dealers ...
If you are looking to grab a used 10D from someone who may have upgraded recently etc.. that is when E-bay may be of value.

Any camera that comes with 512GB memory for $1700 sounds like scam to me

I'd avoid eBay for major purchases like that. As CDS says, maybe if the person has posted a used 10D for sale and you follow up with them and get a satisfactory response to all of your questions. Even then, I would use an escrow service to protect yourself.
But $1700 is alot to drop sight-unseen, especially on a place like eBay. I buy a lot on eBay, so I am a fan, but I've been burned before purchasing camera equipment and I'd avoid it for anything over $500.
My $0.02.

I'm confused. Thanks Pradeep, CDS and vvizard .... but Chris1le - explain. What do you mean, 'not a scam'? Are you getting my hopes up?
Careful, I'm dSLR fragile at the moment!

If you click the link you can buy it at that price right now. I bought my 10D and all lenses and accessories from B&H. Many others on this site have had great experiences with B&H as have I. So go on and add to your shopping cart! :D Just remember this wont be your last purchase from them.

What we mean is a place you can buy stuff and not worry about not getting the merchandise you order. I started a topic called "Member Recommended Dealers" in "Marketplace" portion of this forum. B&H definitely gets my thumbs way up! I have spent some serious cash there in the last year.
Just out of curiosity, what is it that makes you want to go DSLR? It is a huge step from the G2! There are preprogrammed modes but shooting full manual is all the more fun! I hope you realise you will be spending several thousand dollars to get it set up! Then the lenses come in...there again thousands of dollars can be spent there too! Just forewarning to aviod cardiac arrest! :)

There you go.. a nice bundle from a reputable dealer :)
It wasn't the idea of a Bundle I was concerned about.. it was the scammers on E-bay...
The B&H deal looks pretty good! :) (and SAFE)

Canuck was curious as to why I was thinking of leaping from G2 to dSLR. I work at an international school and have been asked to be school photographer (they know how keen I am!). Doing this I realise the limitations of the G2 - mainly shutter lag, and not 100% reliable focusing. A lot of the shots I do I can do with G2 but there are some - graduation ceremony, Queen visiting etc where I'm not confident with the camera.
Plus - I'm getting paid for doing it! Not a huge amount - maybe $300 per month...... but hey! So I can almost persuade myself that the upgrade would pay for itself. I was thinking to hold on until the wrinkles in the top-end prosumer cameras are ironed out: shutter lag, noise clean up to 200 at least etc because I like the portability, the put-in-your-large-pocket-and-go that an all-in-one has. But it's tools for the job I guess.

This is a good deal. if you both of these items separately it would cost close to $2000. you would be saving $300, which is enought to spend on a starter lens. :)
as for the step up from teh g2 to the 10d, I think if you are ready then why not. I went from the g3 (which I had for 7 months) to the 10d. never believed that it was to much camera.

Re-read the B&H ad. There is no lens included. Flash memory prices have been reduced quite a bit just within the last week or two. It's not a $2000 deal.

If this is what you mean, they look honest enough-allthough i breifly saw some other replies that even B&H has a good deal so maybe gfo with them.. :)
As for the kit stigma lenses.............
they are the cheapest models sigma makes.they'll get some good pics but nothing great
here is a folder of pics from that same model 100-300 used on a 300D (sorry about the colour ballance-uploaded these before my new monitor)...and the originals were sharper than these heavily compressed jpegs

Cool! It is just that the influx of people upgrading from p&s to DSLR (usually the 300D) get it and then are clueless. We can only do so much.
There in lies a problem from my end and probably a lot of others...like in what do they take pics of, and how much are you willing to spend comes to mind immediately. Then after that there is the consumer vs L glass and so forth. Believe you me, I had some cheap glass in the beginning and it was awful. Just keep this in mind, that the pics will only be as good as the glass in front of the sensor!

I have had an experience with buying from a dealer that isnt reputable. Ask the regulars here, there was a thread about a mile llong on my adventure. The company was BROADWAY PHOTO out of NY. I will NEVER, and I repeat NEVER buy from a dealer that isnt a well know name. B&H or Adorama for me, or a local shop.
Dont try to save a egg and risk losing your whole nest. Buy B&H, the piece of mind is well worth the extra few bucks.

I don’t know a bought you guys but I am ready to dump my 10D's for the new model camera that will be replacing it very very soon. I skipped the 1DMK II just to much camera don’t need it. If I am spending $4500 I would get the Kodak PRO 14C "C" for canon and enjoy the full frame and 14 Pixels. It is a hell of a camera much improved over the first one. Well worth the price for what I do.

>>Ebay is a great place to buy canon gear. I got my canon 24-70 L New On ebay and saved over $150 from B&H 's Price.<<
I'll have to second that! About a month ago I took a chance on the SAME lens at the SAME price on ebay from a seller called Flashpoint Cameras. It arrived at my doorstep EXACTLY as listed (brand new with Canon USA warranty AND valid rebate form) 48 hours later.
I usually deal with Adorama or B&H, too. Sure, there are scammers out there on ebay, but if you're careful you can usually spot them.
If you run across this seller (Flashpoint Cameras) on ebay, he's OK (at least in my only experience with them). They saved me $150.00 over B&H or Adorama's price on this lens, and didn't pull ANY crap like outrageous shipping fees or trying to sell me accesories with it. I'll buy from these guys again through ebay anytime.
I'm not affiliated with these guys in any way, just a satisfied customer with a brand new 24-70 L lens to go on my new 1DM2 :D !

It isn't easy though as allmost everyone has awsome feedback
Which is why you need to study the feedback before you commit yourself. A reputable business will receive a large quantity of positive feedback daily, not just a few here and there. Check out what some of those buyers are purchasing, are they reasonable ticket items, or $2 trinkets? What is the seller's positive percentage? How many negatives has he received in the past week? Past month? Someone with a good reputation is unlikely to jeopardize it by screwing you.
