:)

O-kay.. well it isn't really the MkII's problem..

... but it is the cause :)

The problem is that for the first time since the latest version of "SkyNet" went online... I am dissatisfied with it's performance.

The MkII's RAW files are dragging SkyNet to a screeching hault!

This version of SkyNet is now Two years old.. sporting a paltry (by todays standards) AMD XP1900+ in a slightly tweeked Abit KG-7 Raid Mobo with a cool gig of Corsair DDR.

So.. I am looking at the upgrade path...

Anyone have any recomendations for a Dual Opteron board?

Two things:

1.-I work with computers, but I don't have a clue what all that lingo means. Could you put that in English? (Of course, if I don't know what it means, I probably wouldn't be able to help anyway)

2.-(The real point) Does this really belong in the EOS forum? Wouldn't 'General Chat' be a better place for a computer hardware discussion? 8)

Just trying to keep you honest.

Have Fun

Of course you could go get a Mac...:) Reportedly they blow the PCs away!

I'd stick with Intel, especially now the Xeons are at a sensible price. I run a pair of Xeons and 4GB of RAM and not all software takes full advantage, so it is worth checking.

If I understood a word of what you just posted (other than Mark II) I probably wouldn't be much help anyways!

Dual processor boards are only an advantage for stuff like servers running a lot of relatively small programs at a time using an OS that splits the workload and for software written for duals. I am not sure about Photoshop CS (I think that is what you use) The Mac version can use dual processors, don't know about the Windows.
However to be honest any modern fast processor and plenty of RAM plus perhaps a fast hard disk should make even PS seem fairly fast!

PSCS will take advantage of Duallies on an XP pro system..

likewise.. when I use PS I usually have an image browser working.. so by using a duallie I will be able to have other apps using one CPU and PSCS using the other exclusiveley.

I'm looking at the Tyan Thunder... which has 8,.. 8 count them eight Dimm slots!   for a total of 16GB of addressable RAM.. (thinking I may actually try for 4 gigs.. ie: 8 512MB sticks  )

Anyhoooo... it'll be a while before I jump in.. thanks for the input.

Nice links Canuck.. I forgot about AMDMB.com.. I think I may even be sighned up on there forums..

Kenny.. we all have our preferences.. but my wagon has been hooked to the underdog for far tooo long to go back :)

I would go with a Dual Opteron. AMD will be first to market with Dual Core (2 processors on a single die) CPUs. Pop in 2 of the new Dual Core Opterons and your "Dual" becomes a "Quad" system. This works because the new Opterons will be pin compatable.

Unix. Unix is the only way to really take advantage of raw power, lots of CPUs and gigs of memory. And not that whimpy Linux stuff either. You need the real stuff. AIX and RS6000's.

Why not do it properly - write your own OS and image manipulation software from scratch using assembler :D ... oh and a browser so you can read this forum!

whoa flashback indeed. it took me reading the whole page before i figured out that this thread is three years old. the give away was that AMD 'was going to be" the first to introduce dual core haha.

Not to mention that AMD was a good deal faster than Intel in those days..

Now, I'm going to sit back and see how many helpful advices you get for a new computer system to replace your crappy old snail of a computer from people who read this old resurrected thread.
