One lonely night, some time ago, I received my 30D. Just a wee hour after my 30D arrived at my doorstep i sat down to read. What was i going to read you might ask yourself. The answer to that is a simple one, I was going to read about the intricate directions on how to uses this new marvel, that is a DSLR. As i searched the web for a site worthy of my Intellect and drollness  I came upon a forum. This forum was unlike one i have ever seen before. Men, women and even children from all over the world joined with one common love, photography (and canon). At that moment I was forever hooked to Photography-on-the.net. Please, share your stories whether long or short, glamorous or dreary, of how you came to find this forum.

You asked how we got here.

This might help.

Morpheus: You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. (a red pill is shown in his other hand) You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes. (Long pause; Neo begins to reach for the red pill) Remember -- all I am offering is the truth, nothing more.
(Neo takes the red pill and swallows it with a glass of water)

I think it was back when I was researching 20D v. 350D and this must have popped up... this is the first forum ever I've stayed with long-term - usually I join, ask the question I need to, get a response and never go back because that's that... this one's kept me here, though, for so many reasons. Can't properly remember how I found it but I imagine that was it.

Another fellow POTN member had a DSLR before I got one - he would always link me to photos and threads here, so I needed to get a username to view some of them.

A year later I ditched the film SLR and bought my 20D, and then I started posting!

I had just bought this crazy camera that was WAYYYYY over my head so I was researching how to use the dang thing.. and ofcourse wanted to see pictures of what it could do... and stumbled upon this spot.. I would spend hours and hours just looking through the photos in awe.. and I'd see something I wanted to do to and the rest is history...

BTW.. the camera was a Pro 1 and my second DSLR shows up tomorrow...

I've been a member at another photo forum for a while. One day, someone mentioned POTN so I pointed my browser over here!

I've been a member over there for just over a year and have less posts than I do here and I've only been here a month or so! LOL

I really like the atmosphere here. People are friendly and knowledgable. Its a laid back, inviting place. Now I need to do my part to help out and get some POTN gear!

A big thanks to the owner and mods for making this a great place!

I was standing at an intersection in Helsinki, Finldand. I was holding a cardboard sign which read, "Will work for food."

A nice man in an Alfa Romeo drove by, gave me a cheeseburger, and made me a moderator.

That's an excellent question. I've been shooting Canon for many, many years. I was an early member of Photo.net because they had an excellent EOS forum, among other things, and then not long after I followed a link from there back to here and joined here as well (man, that was nearly 5 years ago). I didn't post much here at first, but now this is my primary home on the internet.

You know, I just can't get into the whole manties thing. My wife bought me a pair of silk boxers a few years ago, and man, I tell you, it's just not right. :)

At my advanced age, cruisin' the net is strenuous and tiring (click, click, clik). While resting here, I read a few posts and was intrigued. I joined and posted.....

Photosguy (moderator) sent a PM...."are you the same Jon who hired me for a shoot 20+ years ago"?

Haven't been able to untangle myself since then.

I was a member of another forum that was all gushy and told everybody they were awesome. I was looking for real critique so I could learn, googled forums and found a ton, but this one stuck - and I LOVE the glamour section! Then over the past year I've made some pretty cool friends- which I used to think was completely useless: internet friends- who cares, they don't really know you- but its not the case :) I love this place and feel like I could go most anywhere in the world and enjoy a nice lunch/beer/margarita/cup of coffee with an 'old friend'!

I was looking for review of canon dslr and found this site while looking at shutterbug site. Been on this site everyday since then. I guess around two or three month now. Love to read and look at all the posting. Great site for helping me learn to use my camera.

Actually, I made up the part about the cardboard sign. Truth is, I really don't remember how I first came to POTN, but I'm sure Google had a hand in it. Something must have 'clicked' (other than my shutter), because I immediately felt at home. In fact, this is the first forum of any sort that I've ever participated in, and I've made many friends here. What amazes me most is that after nearly 4 years, I'm no less enthused about POTN than I was in the beginning. No doubt a lot of that has to do with Pekka's original goal which was to keep it all informative, welcoming, and friendly. I'd say he's been pretty successful.

I was doign some research on online gallery software, and Google pointed me (among other things) towards Exhibit Engine 2 (http://photography-on-the.net/ee/). Funny thing is that the forum caught my eye...

"Ohhhh... photography forum!" (I've a degree in photojournalism)
"Ohhhh... a CANON photography forum!!" (I've a 20D)

I started browsing though all the great reference material posted around, and eventually figured I should register and say hi.

... and it's all been downhill from there. I've basically been making a half-assed attempt at wedging myself into this community since then.

The 10D had just been announced but not yet released. I got myself on the waiting list for it at B&H, then did a Google search to find a place to read up about it. I ended up on the DPReview forums, but it only took a couple days before I realized how much I hated that place. So, I went back to Google and landed here.

I was standing in the checkout line of one of the last great brick and mortar camera stores buying my 10D and a guy said over my shoulder: "Do you know about the Canon forum run by some guy in Finland?" It was like "...plastics young man, plastics." I thought we needed another movie reference.

Once upon a time in a land far, far away, I bought a Canon G1. I did a search on Canon digital photography then and found a site that some guy named Pekka had started and featured some amazing images that he had taken with the G1. I have been happy here ever since.
