View Full Version : Wow!! Six "new" Lenses

So, I've been a little dissappointed with the clarity of the DRebel with both the kit lens and a Canon 28-85 Zoom; VERY soft, especially around the edges. Today, I came across an Olympus-to-Canon lens converter on the internet, and tried some of my 20-year old OM Zuiko lenses just by hand holding the lens onto the camera body. Holey-schmoley!! What a difference. I even tried out my 200mm fixed with a doubler (I'm guessing it converts to about 640mm with the 1.6 crop). I can see detail on a house about 2.5 miles away.
Time to order up the actual adapter and breathe life back into my six OM lenses. I'm also VERY much satisfied with the DRebel photos now. If this is at all indicative of comparing standard Canon lenses to the cherished "L" lenses I can see why people contemplate trading their offspring for them. :)
The hummingbird was taken with the 200mm (no doubler), and was cropped quite a bit (this is about 15% of the original photo). It may still be a little blurry because focusing is a bit tricky, but it still shows more crispness than the other two lenses. If you've got older lenses laying around, you may want to try them out.

I had no idea that there were such things. You know, this isn't a bad idea considering that you could probably get a pretty good quality manual lens that is "old" and on ebay for the less than a moderate quality lens (like I have to buy b/c I'm poor) would cost.

I heard of these in the past, but it never dawned on me to try a totally manual lens on one of these techno-gizmo cameras.
Also, some off-brand lenses won't work. Luckily, the Olympus' lens-to-film distance is 44 mm, while the Canon is 46mm. This means the adapter is 2-mm thick to make the focusing correct. If it was the other way around I wouldn't be able to focus at infinity. Also, the diameter of the Olympus is less than the Canon. This allows the lens to be flush with the Canon body (fit inside it). It looks like several dimensions have to be correct for lenses to be adaptable, and fortunately the Olympus-Canon combo works.
However, this turns the DRebel into a manual camera, but the exposure meter still works because of the through-the-lens metering. Only the focusing will cause a problem This Olympus has a split-circle to help focusing. On the Canon it'll be eye-balling it. :)

Olympus is definitely one of the rarer ones to adapt, allthough it is possible with an easy to buy adapter.
The most common are T-mount lenses such as cheap 500mm mirror lenses, nikkors and screw mount lenses such as pentax
Also there is the option of modifying old non adaptable lenses
So far i've done a nice old constant aperture konica telezoom, experimented with various FD lenses, temporarily changed a couple of pentax K mount lenses and just recently changed over n FD80/1.8(not completely finished-abit crude)
....i'll modify an old FD300/2.8 one day.... :D :D
BUT
There are some issues with metering not working correctly in some situations. The various lenses i've used tend to overexpose anything up to 3 stops but usually 1/2 to 1 1/2 stops.I have heard vague stories about only some 300D bodies (among other bodies)doing this...don't know yet but mine does and many other EOS bodies i've used tend to as well.

That’s the way I use it 95% of the time anyhow.

These seem a bit pricey considering that there was an old post from a guy who made metal adaptors using a Canon body cap & a Nikon rear lens cap. Still, having 6 “new”, fast lenses has to be a good thing!

FD lenses have a 42mm lens register in contrast to 44 mm for EOS. Therefore you can fit FD lenses to EOS bodies with mechanical, so-called Macro adapters without glass, but they won't focus to infinity. Teleconverter-like adaptors change the optical properties and are either expensive, hard to get and only for long pro-lenses, or the cheap ones screw up the good optical quality. No dice.
Not to talk about the problem of manual focusing with a small screen without focusing aids like split-prism.

Ehh, I actually had already decided not to bother trying it. :D The only decent old lens I have is an 50mm 1.8, and I can just buy the modern version for $70 so I figure it would be pointless. I can't see well enough to manually focus, anyway.

Really? I'll have to take a look. I wasn't too thrilled at the $200 price for a bit of machined metal, even if it was a custom, low volume item.
Thanks, Ron.

Hi Chazs
You' ve just made my day (my year!!!).
Could you please let me know where you found the adapter to convert OM lenses for an EOS system.
Many, many, many thanks again

Hi Bob, I ordered mine up from cameraquest yesterday:
http://www.cameraquest.com/frames/4saleReos.htm
Probably a little more expensive than it really should be. But it wasn't too hard to convince the wife that I saved $4000 in not having to buy new lenses. :)
Here's also a link to a fella that shoots exclusively with Olympus lenses on the DRebel

Pretty nice pictures.
