Hello,

I would like to purchase some filters for my G3 but I want to make sure that I can use them on a better camera when I decide to buy one. Specifally what size filters should I buy for my G3? I commonly see 52mm and 58mm for sale.

In case it matters the camera I want eventually upgrade to would be a 1d mark II or maybe a 1Ds if I win the lottery.

Thanks,
Vince

It all depends. Every SLR lense will probably have a different thread size. Unless you know specifically which lenses you want then it will be hard to predict. One idea is that you could buy a big size and use step down rings to fit that filter on any smaller lense. This isn't a perfect solution though because then you may not be able to put on a lense hood and it may not look very nice.

For example some of the more common better Canon SLR lenses and their filter sizes:

50 f1.4: 58mm
28-135 IS USM : 72mm
17-40L : 77mm
70-200 f4L: 58mm
70-200 f2.8L: 67mm
100-400L IS: 77mm

Kit lens for the DRebel ... 58 mm

Be aware that if you go for a 67 mm or even 77 mm filter you're talking up to 100$ per filter (e.g. circular polarized)... the 58 mm versions should be a lot cheaper.
