I'm looking to put together an off-camera flash kit, and I'm currently looking at this to put on top of the light stand: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart_accessories&A=details&Q=&sku=42160&is=REG

I've heard of bad mounts breaking and dropping flashes to the ground, so I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with this unit and could reassure me about it. Will it work alright for me? Also, does anyone know if the hot shoe it comes with will work alright with a 580EX?

Hi bieber,

That umbrella bracket and most others like it will work fine. Your flash will be secure on that bracket or on a hot show adapter on top of that bracket as long as you make sure it's secure. None of the components will break or fail so it's up to you to tighten and secure all fittings and screw down rings. Umbrella brakcets like that one are in common use and they work quite well.

It comes with a shoe, but not a hotshoe.

The shoe provides a mechanical mount for the flash, but no electrical or sync connection, so it is not "hot".

It will clamp right on to the 580EX shoe using the provided thumbscrew, or alternately the tightening ring on the 580EX will clamp to the shoe

Enjoy! Lon
