View Full Version : Do folks in the WP forum have a sense of humor?

Tim definitely doesn't, that man is a machine (;) Tim), but how about the rest of us? Are we all just grumpy sourpusses, waiting for the next hapless sucker to dare ask us which lens he should buy for his upcoming neice's/cousin's/sister's/wife's wedding?

Go ahead punk - ask us what f stop to use in a church...make my day...

I hope not, but the recent "banishment" thread has made me a little introspective. I come here to be inspired, to share the experiences, and to help in whatever little ways I can. My apologies if I have put anyone off.

So is it the nature of the beast- do wedding photographers have to leave their sense of fun at the door? and if so, should there be a warning at the door?

I should certainly hope not..... now where did my seeing eye dog run off too...."here kodak, here kodak - come to daddy..."

The banishment thread has left a sour taste in my mouth...

I too, come here to be inspired, learn as much as I can, and also, help out as many people as I can. I do my best to answer the many emails I get through my posts here. Always trying to keep the mood lighter with my somewhat stupid comments because I love to laugh and have fun.

But to be the butt of a joke isn't inspiring, educational, nor does it motivate me to spend the time to try and help people out anymore.

GREAT post...did you read the FAQ before you posted and if you did then did you search all the other threads to see if there was a smililar post and if you did then are you a real pro photographer....if you think you are then what kind of computer do you have and we'll judge by that!!! LOL .... just kidding of course.... again...awesome post!

I'd Like yo think that everyone has a sense of humour, some just don't keep theirs with them.....I think it may be under the bed or something ;)
I've seen some really inspiring threads and then some of them have been quite witty in their content.
But I think DJ hit the nail on the head, sometimes it feels like that's all that's in some posts.

Hey Jamie! Regrettably, I do think there should be a sign at the door...maybe like "enter if you dare".

There probably isn't any room for fun or humor in wedding photography. These are peoples highest emotions we deal with and there is only the one, rarest of moments to capture it and do so with machine-like perfection.

Every image counts in this multi-billion dollar industry. Strike that...every pixel counts! If someone doesn't have at least 3 cameras and 5 lenses, they place an entire life of wedded bliss in peril. And mind you, these cameras better not be just any old 8 mp units that any old family member might have...

Heaven forbid anyone come in here and post a selectively colorized image; that heresy cannot be abided. And let me be the first to say right now, black and white is being used far too often anymore. If I wanted to see jumping shots I'd go to a track meet. If I wanted to see pix of flowers or gardens I'd spend more time over in the nature forum. This is the W-E-D-D-I-N-G forum.

If you are having fun here you are not being serious enough (except for Tim). Without steadfast attention an errant whisp of shadow might dare cross the slightest portion of a dress or shirt. And if you don't know how to fix that, you better go to the lighting forum.

This is the W-E-D-D-I-N-G forum. Brides, grooms, expertise and constant updates about how many gigs are booked for '09 already!

And if you think this is bad, go over to PWP!

I've gotten to know some people in here, and they are also anything but grumpy old sourpusses.

What "banishment" thread? Let's see!

When I asked for some advice some months ago about attending a friends wedding I got some negative, neutral comments. I was a guest and a relative noob at photog (got my 300D in the summer of 2004). I stayed out of the way of the Pro once I introduced myself and did candids only. Suffice to say the B&G and wedding guests love the pics and want copies.

One thing I think that people must remember is the wide social spectrum! Some people can afford a 20, 30, £40,000+ wedding. Some people can only afford a 500-£1,000 wedding! Some people can't even afford a wedding! If a friend or family member offers to help these on the lower ladders then please! Help them!

I was a wedding photographer for over thirty years and my sense of humour was what carried me through most of them! The trouble with sense of humour, though, is that it's very subjective and you have to be very careful to tailor that humour to your audience. For instance, I believe that there is such a thing as 'British humour' that doesn't necessarily travel across the Atlantic (although Monty Python gives the lie to that, to a degree).

The other problem, of course, is that in written communications such as e-mails and forums, the tone of voice (vital in most humour) is impossible to convey without the use of those dreadful acronyms (lol, rofl etc) which seem, ironicall, to take all the humour out of a comment!

I sincerely hope that this was written tongue-in-cheek! If not, then the answer to the OP's question is probably 'no'. And, if you meant the sentence about "There probably isn't any room for fun or humor in wedding photography." then you must have a miserable existence as a wedding photographer.

Hang on, I've just read the post again and have decided that it must have been said tongue-in-cheek!

Darn it all, the day job had me offline for a day & half & clearly I missed all the drama!

Let's be fair, it does get tedious having to answer the same exact questions over & over & over because someone fails to start at the beginning. I spent three months READING every post in this forum before I ever posted, and I admit I find it hard sometimes to be tolerant of those who don't do the same. But I simply don't post if I'm in that kind of mood.

Most of the wedding photographers I've met in person, and a sizeable percentage I've met online are fantastic people, great at what they do & more willing to share if you're willing to meet them halfway & do some research on your own first. This is a BUSINESS to them, not a hobby, and time is money. If you can't be bothered to learn exposure/ understand camera functions/read the dang FAQ for pity's sake, why on earth would you expect them to help you?

Having said that, the level of hostility does seem worse in recent months, and I find I spend less time here because of it. And I almost never post pictures here because of it. I know my work's improving & I'd love honest feedback, but my ego is still a little too fragile to take that feedback if it's presented too bluntly. Yes, I'm a wuss.

Can I say something?.. and maybe i'm a bit off base but, I think the banishment thread was more about Perma not getting to go into her regular threads than her being banished into the wedding forum.. It just so happens that this was perceived to be her least used place... If she had been stuck in Birds, People, Macro, or General chat it wouldn't have been as funny.. I don't think that it was a direct commentary on the attitudes and personalities (or lack there of) in the wedding forum.. Besides he who should not be named wouldn't take that kind of swipe at anyone.. let alone a whole group of very talented, helpful and what i've always perceived to be nice photographers..

It would kind of be like me getting stuck in the glamour forum... Everytime I hit the new post I have to check myself not to click onto any thread with just a name for a title.. But, it's absolutely not a commentary on the photographers there.. simply not my preference..

I think I try to have a sense of humor, but I am, admittedly, easily instigated. I have always hated bully's and when I see egos flying, or newcomers getting the shaft, it kinda flips me off.

I should really stay on my prozac that the Dr. ordered me to take :D

Honestly, I come here to learn, as most have already said, but I tend to get sidetracked looking at some of the more "heated" threads (aka: the train wreck threads.)

It's funny, I think if we all met the members we think are bafoons, we would find them to be very nice people. I think, for some, it is very hard to convey personality in writing... I believe I fall into that catagory... Thats my excuse... whats yours? ;)

And I should stay on my medication as well. ;)

I also agree that it's very hard to convey subtle nuances with the written word. That gets me and others into trouble.

And to answer the OP's question, no, I have no sense of humor like most people. In fact, I have a great deal of difficulty understanding humor at all. Once a nerd, always a nerd, I suppose.

The straw that broke the camels back was when I CC'ed some of Tim's photos, he said thanks and agree on one disagreed on another thats kewl. :}

Why is it that all our threads turn to sex these days? :) gee whiz- Are we all un-funny, over sexed - undersexed, old, young, grumpy photographers??? No Way!

I for one am not really offended by these *bash the wedding forum*, I'm leaving POTN, another forum is better, ya'll are a bunch of fluffers threads. It's life! Some people will always say things that hurt other's people's feelings, people will always have different opinions. Some people will just always be blunt, forward, always cheerful, kinda funny, not funny at all. There will always be "the inner circle". And there will always be people that feel they are on the outside. I am a firm believer no question is a stupid question...do the same questions get asked 500 times- yes- raise a kid- get used to it. If you think its stupid, don't respond. Its really that simple. Or I may think some thing is stupid in my head, but I surely wouldn't write it. Just move along.

I think there are plenty of threads out there with great humor in them! Many! I love the forums and plenty of the people- far more than the ones that bug me :)

So cheers Jamie- I think there are plenty of us to keep a little humor shoved in every now and then! :)

whew- :) I think that must be my longest reply EVER!

The rope asks " Can I just use your restroom right quick?" Bartender "yes". The rope goes to the bathroom and ties himself in a knot and unravels his threads... sneaks out the window and walks back into the bar sits down and orders a drink- bartender say's "hey, aren't you the same rope that just came in here?" Rope say's " No,I'm afraid not!" ;) : he he :) I LOVE CHEESEY JOKES!

BTW - I did not mean this thread to be a slam on Tim. That's why I put the wink next to the first line of my post.

Fact is, I think Tim is a very valuable contributer and a heck of a photographer who has put a lot more time and effort than I in helping people on this board!

I hate to burst your bubble Jamie, but not all of them are perfectly lit. Some are beautifully lit, some incredibly lit, some UNBELIEVABLY lit........ must..... find.....more..... adjectives.....

Judging by OP's original description, may have to use at LEAST two 580ex's

I think his boobs are lit perfectly naturally...
