View Full Version : What's in the name?

PacAce

I see a lot of interesting sounding "handle" on this forum and I've always wondered what the significance was for some of them or why you picked that name. Some are very obvious but others are rather thought provoking. Would you like to share the reason or significance of yours? Thanks. :)

Scottes

Well, someone else already took Scott, another took ScottS. So I threw my middle initial in there. Boring, huh? Better than "Nbfdkvhbdkbd" though. :)

How about you, PacAce? What's your handle mean?

PacAce is just an abbreviation for Pacific Ace. It's a handle I made for myself during my CB days way back (remember the CB radios? :) ). And the reason I came up with that name is because 1) I grew up in Okinawa, a little island in the Pacific and 2) my last name starts with an A as in the Ace of Spades in a card deck.

While mine sounds like it came from photography it didn't. Several years ago (I guess about 8 now) I wanted a pair of perscription sunglasses. Not congtent with the regular shaded sunglasses I asked for them to coat the lenses so that they were blue. I told them my inspiration were those cheap round ultra blue hippie-esque sunglasses you can get for $10 at the gas station. They said they would give it their best shot and viola, there were my bluelens. I kinda stuck to the word and have used it for my online presence ever sense.

Yeah, a long wordy response to the question. I guess I could have just said..My sunglasses are tinted blue and that is where I came up with bluelens.

Oh well.

Interesting. And do you still wear blue sunglasses? :)

Yup, but they are severly in need for new prescription. I have had my regular glasses changed out a few times since then and have yet to "update" the sunglasses.

Of course I find it interesting to shoot while wearing them. I have learned to take them off when using any filters (outside of a UV of course) the hard way. Red filter with blue sunglasses makes it hard to use the viewfinder

CoolToolGuy

CoolToolGuy is a handle for one of my other passions - Special tools, primarily for Porsche and VW. I have collected them since I worked in a dealership, and now I sell them as a sideline. Cool Tools are the special tools that help you do a specific task without scraping your knuckles or ruining the thing you are trying to fix. Nowadays the money I make from them funds my glass collection - lenses, that is.

Have Fun,

I chose stop bath as a bow to the dark room of photography... And stop bath sounds better than developer or fixer....

Cadwell
28th of May 2004 (Fri), 14:06
I'm a motor-sport nut. Cadwell Park is probably the best circuit in the country (UK). It's been described as a mini-Nurburgring (and they're not referring to that joke of a circuit the F1 boys go round nowadays either). It's also a "circuit that time forgot" in the sense that there are very few of the intrusive modern safety features like huge gravel traps and there are no catch fences whatsoever! :D

I love the place. If you ever get the chance to watch motor racing there you won't regret it.

p.s. They do a great Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding in the clubhouse too ;)

maderito
28th of May 2004 (Fri), 15:07
A Latina friend told me that my nickname in Spanish might be Maderito - from madera=wood. Turns out to be a relatively unique name, even among Latinos. Maybe she was lying. :)

Someone from Spain later told me it's a local slang word for undercover cops.

If I ever move to Spain, I'll find another handle.

Jemmind
28th of May 2004 (Fri), 17:17
The idea for my screen name came from a story I read once (and cannot remember now :(, how ironic) ; it was about some goblins or trolls or some other little critter that had an ability called Diamond mind, it is crystal-like clarity of thinking, very smart beings. I liked that idea, and consider myself fairly intelligent but also somewhat creative, so I changed it to jemmind.

Belmondo
28th of May 2004 (Fri), 18:11
Years ago I used to write an occasional article for a regional Porsche Club magazine. The editor (a salt-of-the-earth type) made up the name 'Belmondo Bladderburst' as a pen name for me. I complained bitterly that it was beneath even my dignity, and finally got it shortened to 'Belmondo'.

BTW, I claimed the name 'Meatloaf' as my CB handle, but the same guy eventually morphed it into 'Uncle Smelly Meat'. I admit the name is rather catchy, but felt it detracted from the diginified image I was attempting to nurture.

He was quite a wit, and possibly one of the main reasons I sold my Porsche and never joined another car club again.

Mine is a spinoff of the name Lazarus. He was that guy that was raised from the dead, and given another chance at life. I used to be quite a different person. I've done a complete 180, and feel like my past is dead, and my future is alive.

Probably not what anyone expected.

Wanted Belmondo but some guy out in the desert beat me to it.

Mills
28th of May 2004 (Fri), 21:37
Real Name Scott Miller. My best friend in 4th grade started calling me Mills. At one point in college, it got to the point that I did even "hear" Scott. Now as I age, Scott is making a comeback, except with my closest friends.

Ok mine is a little complicated so bear with me. When I was born I was named Jeff. I grew up in Indianapolis, a town which is known as Indy. I have a some friends who go by IndyGlenn and IndyLP so, IndyJeff was a natural selection. You still reading this? Geez, it wasn't that complicated afterall.

Canuck
29th of May 2004 (Sat), 04:48
I do believe I have gone into this before...
This one "Canuck" is a kind weird joke. I had been searching for the famous Err 99 problem and stumbled on this forum. Next come up with a name that is kinda like me but not entirely. I am from near Canada, but not Canadian. That said, whilst living in the NE US, I was always up on Canadian news and stuff. There was a show that was great to watch, Royal Canadian Air Farce. You had to be up on what is going on to get the punchline. That and the fact I have an amateur radio licence and was always talking to Canadians on 2 metres. What is even more amusing is that a lot of the British think I am Canadian, so that is another piece that made me choose Canuck. So, for those of you that don't know Canuck is slang for a Canadian. So now we jump ahead a long time and nearly 900 posts and over a year later.

I got into computers and local BBS systems about 20 years ago, long before I heard of the Internet. I always used the name "Tom Sawyer" online because I'm a big Mark Twain fan. When I finally did find my way to the Internet, I kept finding that name already taken everywhere I went, so I decided on a more obscure Mark Twain character, Tom Canty, the poor kid in "The Prince and the Pauper". So far I haven't seen the "Name already in use" error when registering on a new web site anywhere while using this one...

Skipper
29th of May 2004 (Sat), 05:18
Nick Name is "Skip" but that was taken but Skipper thats another thing.

My mother had a girlfriend that was married to a Skipper of a Ship, and she was there the day I was born.

You got it, she picked me up and said " Your the cutest little Skipper I have ever seen". Darn did that ever take.

It was Robert for a few years in school (home was always Skipper) till a teacher found out I had a nick name from that point on it was Skipper.

29th of May 2004 (Sat), 22:58
While at sea on a rope yarn sunday afternoon (USS Missouri BB-63) I complimented a friend on a charcoal sketch he was drawing of the sun setting upon the waves. I told him that I wished that I could sketch like him. He told me that he wished he could write like me and that we're both sketcher's, just using different tools.

So that's me. Sketcher

I thought long and hard. Something easy to remember. Something that involves little typing. Something that will brand myself as a member of this community, sharing in the community mind. Something no other loser/poser would ever try to copy.

Then it hit me.

Hence this glorious result.

...

hey tom, "belmondo" is apparently a french actor --- Jean Paul Belmondo.

The "trademarks" for Belmondo are as follows -

Has an inimitable smile.
Always performs all the stunts himself.
Usually combines action with comic episodes
Chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history (#52).
Divorced in 1965, he later had long relationships with actresses Ursula Andress and Laura Antonelli.

The similarities are uncanny :D

That's a nice comfortable song btw..

My Internet-handle dates back to '97, when I first bought myself a network-card for the computer, and went to spend a holiday locked up inside with another 30-40 or so geeks. That was the first computer-party I attended. Think I was 12-13 years then. Needed a nickname for the computer to show up in the Windows Network Neighbourhood (oh lord, I've sinded so much during my youth). Anyway, I chose WizarD.. Guess I wanted to give others the impression that I was a computer-wizard or something :-P Anyway I've stuck with the name ever since, but slightly modified it to use two "v"'s instead of a "w", when I found out that wizard was quite a common screename on Internet Relay Chat.

I have to admit that I belong to the boring 'it's just my name' fraction.

However, given the amount of posts I've done here without actually saying much, but to a considerable part during my working hours, I might just change it ... cause if somebody from my company ever comes across that forum, then I'm in trouble  .

Best regards,
Andy

Well, first there was one - me.

Then there were two - my wife and me.

Then there were three - my oldest daughter, my wife and you guessed it...me.

Finally there were four - my youngest daughter, my oldest daughter, my wife
and a trip to the doctor for a simple day surgery for ME!

4walls,

I had pegged you for a James Taylor fan:

...But I need four walls around me to hold my life
To keep me from going a-stray
And a honky-tonk angel to hold me tight
To keep me from slipping away...

"Bartender Blues" - James Taylor

A wife, 2 children, and that small surgical procedure will certainly keep you on the straight and narrow. :)

I own plans set #305 for a hombuilt airplane. http://www.sonex-ltd.com Unfortunately, after I was about 75% finished, my wife and I ran into some cash flow issues and had to sell. I am now on the road to recovery (making more than we spend :D ) and do plan to start building again soon. I still have plans #305, hence the name. Besides, I know nobody else will use it.

I then need an email address for myself and figured arogop would work out quite nicely and continue the theme.

I have since created a website for my girls which is www.wiscgop.com

aro is my initials Andrew Russell Olson
wisc is an abbreviation for Wisconsin

And there is no need to tell you what GOP means cause I know the even the Canadians here know it.

GOP = Grand Ole Party ie. it is the nickname of the Republican Party which we all know started in Ripon, WI
