Why do file sizes change in ZoomBrowser?

I have just found that when I modify a photo in my zoombrowser and rename it that the size of the file shrinks dramatically. EG 1.6mb to 956 kb. The shots look as detailed as ever, but the file is definately smaller. What causes this? Is it an issue for picture quality? Should I get rid of the original and save space? I do notice when copied all the details of the properties file is lost which is not desireable. For this reason alone I would not want to get rid of the original. Thanks. :roll:
