At the top of this forum (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=13 ) , there are a number of "Stickies" with a ton of links. Quite a few of them deal with composition. One that I saw on a quick search was this: http://www.morguefile.com/archive/classroom.php

I'm not the most experienced photographer, so I'll not try to define composition, but I think you'll find a wealth of info if you poke around a little bit.

And welcome to POTN! :D

usually it means that you have an interesting subject matter ... but due the manner the subject is treated, (subject location in the pix, location of other objects in the pix, lens and aperture choice also effect how one composes their pixs), the pix sorts sucks. Improper exposure is also a cause for a pix to suck. For a photo to work you need both, good composition (your eye) and proper exposure (you technical expertise). There is a third factor which is a photo with such impact that composition and exposure really don't matter much.

Good composition brings the viewers eye to the subject or controls the viewer's eye as they move throught the image through the use of any number of techniques - leading lines, positive and negative space, effective use of depth of field, rule of thirds, etc. Lack of composition to me, would mean the photo was taken without thought to any of the principles of composing the shot or how the viewer would perceive the subject.
