I'm sure you've all heard it in it's many forms:
"Wow, look at that camera"
"Oh, you could zoom in on a fly on the wall with that thing"
"Can you see the stars with that thing?"
I'd be interested to hear how you guys respond to these comments!

"Wow, look at that camera"
You look at it. I'll look through it.
"Oh, you could zoom in on a fly on the wall with that thing"
Yep. I could also zoom in on that spot on your face. What is that, anyway?
"Can you see the stars with that thing?"
I can see them without it...can't you?
I'd be interested to hear how you guys respond to these comments!

They're all a variety of the same theme, but these are my favorite queries/quotes:
I wish I had a big, expensive camera like that so I could take great pictures, too.
You must get beautiful photos with a camera that expensive.
So are you a professional, or do you just have a really nice camera?

I got a variation on that once from someone I knew via email. My reply was "thanks for the lovely email, you must have a great keyboard".

I'm 5'2" and 110lbs and when I carry my 5D body with battery grip and my 70-200 L Lens, I get comments like that all the time. I just tell people it just 'looks' big because I'm so small.
One girl replied to me with "oh, like how things smaller on a fatter guy!"
I laughed and then got back to working before getting myself in trouble :)

The one I got this weekend was actually from the Video guy, "have you got enough cameras there Nick" he said with a wry smile on his face ... 3 bodies this weekend because I had a prime on one whilst my 17-55 is being mended (didn't half miss it this weekend) and a 10-22 on the other with the 70-200 on the third ... couldnt think of anything witty to say back unfortunately :)
My 70-200 got some strange looks this weekend when we were shooting the Bride and Bridesmaids in a dept store having their make up done ... and then everyone kept detouring to go by the bride so they could see which celeb we were shooting ... was kinda fun shooting in a busy store. :)

I was in vegas in February and had my 70-200 on. I was shooting in Red Rock Canyon and we went to a show in a ghost town. It was really cold and one of the guys in the show told me he thought I was carrying a thermos of coffee......

I'm gonna fly light for weddings .. one XTi loaded with a 17-55 2.8 and a 580 w/ bracket along with another XTi with an 85 1.8. And maybe a 10-22 in my back pocket.
Leaving the heavy guns at home,

I usually bring a 350d with a 70-200 f2.8 with me to indoor showjumping competitions and use a 20d with an 85mm f1.8 for most of the day, people expect a big lens for a pro so I give it to them. Also the other thing I get asked all the time is "did you get any nice shots?" how do you answer this except for "yes all of them"

People expect professional results from a pro .. there is nothing worse than a shooter with a full bag of equipment and an empty bag of talent.

mmahoney you know what I mean, if I turn up at an event with a 20d with an 85mm f1.8 they tend to want to be reassured by a pro looking camera and also results.

I do know what you mean but there is something so satisfying about doing a job with the exact tools required, and nothing more.
Hopefully your clients will have had a chance to see your portfolio beforehand and know you can do the job. I think our perception of how gear makes us look is not what our clients are thinking.
One thing is for sure .. if the photos are not up to standard the client will be upset, regardless of the equipment used.

Apparently that's only said by people with a vested interest in believing it... according to some of my female friends...

Size matters! Gotta have the big white on one camera and small black with a red stripe with flash bracket on the other. A pro not only shoots like a pro but looks like one as well.

I always extend the zoom to full length and answer with, "Yeah, if I was a man, I'd be compensating for something."
And my zoom ain't that big, really.

Oh I like that one...I'm going to use that next time!
I usually get the "Wow, that's a nice camera" when I'm using a flash bracket, but nothing when it's just the camera and lens. Weird.

I was shooting the local parade on the 4th and the police let me behind the lines where noone else could go. I had my 70-200L mounted on my 20D with a monopod and my
24-70 on my 5D over my shoulder. As I was leaving one of them asked me who I worked for.........I told him I was a freelance!
