I just bought a Nikon D40 thinking it was going to be far superior to my ELPH SD 900...wow the SD 900 takes a much better picture!!!!!!! Crisper, color balance is a bit off (greenish) but what the heck I clean up all my shots in Adobe Photoshop anyways.
I am glad Ritz camera will allow me to return it within 10 days...
These days the difference between point and shoot and entry level DSLR is negliable.

On the contrary, with the D40, you have an SLR.
On automatic settings, yes, there is a chance the canon can perform better because it's automatic, but with the d40 you get no shutter lag, and you can shoot in the RAW format
the raw format gives you more control over your pictures. I think you should take a bit more time to reconsider what you want first from a camera.
