Hi everyone! Here's another shot taken during sunrise but, it turned out to be overcast that morning and it rained. Taken with my 5D, 17-40 @ 17, f/16, manually focused, 3 stop GND, and 1 minute exposure. Please C&C. Thanks. :)

Yes I did use a tripod plus I also used a cable remote to get this long exposure. Thanks for the comments.

Nice shot, my feeling is that it could use with a little less foreground and be a little less centered. Otherwise very well done.

I didn't want it to look centered, the rock formation was kind of difficult to do that especially when placing the tripod which was a real challenge to keep it from falling.

I meant centered horizontally, sorry I wasn't as clear as I should have been. A great shot in any case.

Hi jdizzle,
Some comments as requested :-)
I like this shot, well executed and good framing. With positioning, you have to do the best you can in the circumstances. The horizon looks bowed with the barrel distortion of the lens which can be fixed with some lens correction in PS or by using PTLens (I use this). Did you bring the GND down to half way into the shot? If you did, I would have stopped it right on the horizon line as the top of the rocks look dark. I can see why you used 3 stop as the highlights in the clouds are very light compared to the rest of the sky, and it gives you the blur in the clouds as they move by.
See how the sky is darker than the blue of the water, it makes for an interesting shot. Did it look like this when you took it?
I would have tried a polariser and then a 1 or 2 stop hard GND graduating on the horizon which would have given you the range to get more cloud blur and would have reduced the reflection/glare on the water balancing some of the colour.
All in all a great shot, that just needs slight adjustments. Well done!

Hi rammy! I placed the GND right at the horizon and yes, this is how I saw it. My reasoning for the 3 stop was to not blow out the sky as well since, long exposures can totally blow out the highlights in the sky and of course the cloud blur for effect. I left the distortion on purpose to see if anyone would notice and your the only one that did :) . Haha! Thanks again rammy! Cheers!

I really like the way the rocks have just enough detail to pull your eye into the frame but not over power the overall image The sky is perfect and the wide angle curve at the horizon I think mimics the curvature of the earth and is a great effect with this image. Your exposure was long enough to really make the water interesting but not to misty. And the color. Those rich warm tones can easily over power an image if you don't have enough cool tone to balance it and you have almost a perfect proportion.
GREAT SHOT.
Thanks for posting it....

Man, you used a tripod, you cheater!
V/nice composition, love it! The light is tender, hmmm, blue hour, also my favorite. I actually like the slight barrel distortion of the horizon.
How many did you take? Or did you just go by guts and took this one? I would probably toy around with aperture and times for 15 minutes to get the optimum...
Again, AWESOME!

Zippy I don't think I would change a thing. Heres a famous image that this one (JDs) kind of reminded me of. More because of the rocks than overall mood but they work well in both images I think.

I am not talking about a lot here, I just think that the picture lacks good balance, and that it would look better if the bottom 1/4 or 1/5 (which ends up being the first row or two of rocks) of rocks was cropped out. Overall I love the photo, but noticed when I scrolled down on my screen and blocked the closest rocks in the picture, the picture had better balance and I liked it better. Just my humble, very inexperienced opinion.

Zippy if we all put images together the same way photography would be very boring and not very creative. If you sent 10 of us POTNs out to shoot the same scene I would hope we would get 10 completely different photographs. Unless I see something really egregious I usually will stick to the way the photographer that made the image because its the way he saw it not me. If its really good like I feel this image is I will state my reason why. I would hope all of us would make a different image if we were there at the same time but I'm not 100% sure any would be better than what has been done.

I don't have a problem with that, and I am not entirely sure why you seem bent on telling me how wrong I am about my opinion. As stated, it was my opinion. I like it better with it cropped. Just as you stated, I would hope that we would all take a slightly different picture of the same scene, and the way that I would have taken this picture is to have less rocks in the foreground. Your opinion is that you like it the way it is. GREAT! That is your opinion and I have not lectured you about how you like your photography. I thought that this forum was for sharing photography, ideas, comments, and critiques. That is what I did, and even told you that it was my "humble, inexperienced opinion". I might add that Kenny Chafin (kenyc)seems to have the same basic opinion as I, although he is a much more experienced, much better photographer than I could hope to be.

If you read my post I'm not saying your wrong. There is no absolute right or wrong here. I'm stating that if we all went out and shot this we if we were really good photographers would probably come back with very different images. And if you were there and took it the way you described then we would be able to talk about that. In the mean time I agree with the decision that this photographer took in this instance. Its nothing personal against you because I feel differently about it. I would not have probably taken this the same way as this photographer did but just because he took it differently doesn't make him wrong. In fact I doubt I could have done better. Photography shouldn't be a completion. Its an expression of how one feels about whats being photographed. Just because I might not take an image the same way as this photographer doesn't diminish his image in my eyes nor should it any anyone elses. Enjoy the piece for what it is not the way you would have done it. Thats not saying that you might not have made just as valid of a statement its just that this photographers statement is the one we have to comment on. And I like it just the way it is...

Maybe nnother inverted GND on the foreground rocks to balance with the "wet rocks" again. But still, you have really put some thought into this one! Nice to see that. Well done on the thinking game and the execution!

OK guys & gals back to whats important JDs image. Also if you look at the forground rocks they form an arrow that point up. To not have that I think would make this image less effective. If anyone disagrees its OK. Isn't that what a good debate is all about? But speak up.

It leads you in to the island on the horizon and then up to the sky. Clever eh?

Yeah almost like he planned it that way.;) Its one of my favorite images I've seen over here and theres allot of good stuff. We as photographers communicate in visual language. We use tools like light, shadow, color, texture, perspective to create 3 dimensions on a two dimensional plane. We can create movement where there is none. (jagged lines, strong diagonals, complimentary colors/color vibration). In this image JD pulls your eye into the frame (lighter arrow on the rocks) and also gives you a feeling of texture on the rocks but doesn't over power the sky with it. The cool color of the water balances nicely the warm color of the sun behind the clouds. The symmetry of the image and the balancing of those very warm colors(because if they're not balanced they can cause allot of tension) helps re enforce the tranquil feel of this image. I think this image works much better then the other one though the other image is very nice also.
Anyone feel free to disagree this is only my opinion but JD I really do like this photograph. The only thing I don't like is I didn't take it .

Very eloquent but I prefer the one with the sunrise :-) Just a beauty for me :-) AND I am jealous that JD can get his back side out of bed at 4am! I mean come on, I'm in a dream state that time of day!!!!
Not gonna tell you what I dream of though ;-) teehee

Foreground interest is very important - you got this right, although personally I would have cropped off a bit more of the bottom. To bring the horizon onto the top third line.
Long exposure has made the sea very inviting. Overcast / smothercast - I do not know what the sunrise would have looked like not overcast, but you have shown that even on a dull rainy day the world is a beutiful place.
