Nice Tom, but feels a bit unbalanced to me, maybe less foreground and the pier seems randomly chopped off. I'd prefer the boat in the lower third with more of the background reflection.

The shot you describe is a physical impossibility. The background above the boat was a mish mash of ugly looking poles sticking out of the water and other objects that would have destroyed the image. Why can't people just look at the photo as it is and not fantasize about what they think it should be? Your other suggestion of including more of the pier is another impossibility. Just to the left (had I included it) was another very ugly collection of fresh lumber and a blue tarp.

Tom,
I really like it. The large negative space actually gives it nice ballance. REALLY NICE IMAGE..I wouldn't change a thing. Dont need the entire pier. You know what it is. To me the image is more than a boat at a pier. Its about light, summer, lazy days. REALLY NICE IMAGE.....

I really like this photo. I love the transition of contrast / color from upper left to lower right.

Dude, you seem to just want praise, not suggestions. I'll be glad to not respond to your postings if thats what you prefer........deleted for inconsiderate babbling..., maybe this is one of those.

Better to who? I'm not sure I agree with your assessment of the composition Ken. I think for this image the composition works perfect. I like the room around the subject. It really gives the image a sense of place. The title that was used is perfect and the balance is there. Just a little more sophisticated than some might think. When I was in school we used to have a comment for those that didn't understand some compositions it went something like this
" always crop tight for the visually impaired."
In this case the room around the subject which in my opinion is way more than a boat at the dock and the placement of the subject helps to reinforce serenity. The color pallet is perfect with the gradient moving away from the subject so not to create a tension which would destroy the serenity.
GREAT IMAGE!!! And just the way it is.

Of course you would. :) You already said that. I prefer not conversing with you in any case based on our last interaction so please don't bother addressing your comments to me. Of course I'm sure that's exactly why you did, get in one more jab, eh. :)
This image certainly has some things going for it, but could be better for the reasons I stated and clearly was a compromise due to the reasons Tom stated.

I'll address whoever I want and this isn't personal. I just was pointing out the reason why this image works. So I don't understand why your taking it personal. I mention your name because I disagreed and do disagree with your assessment thats all. Another vital part of the image is the boat pointing out of the frame and being in the upper left. Its pointing to nothing which even further enforces the visual statement of serenity. If you disagree with anything I've said please post what your rational behind your comments are about the image.

I have the answer to that. Kenny is GOD when it comes to photography or just wants to increase his post count. :) :) :) ;)

Look, this is that last time I'm addressing you, you always go off, with this, I know more than anyone here and I'm right and everone else is wrong attitude. It would serve you much better to drop the pretense and attitude and try to fit in. This is taking exactly the same turn as your Sante Fe thread, so just drop it before it goes there.
I've already given Tom my reasons for what it doesn't work for me. They were clear and I have no need to take it any further. Let's see what others think.
The thing that puzzles me is Tom's reaction to my opinion on the image. But that's fine, if he likes it who am I to say otherwise, but my thoughts and opinon on this image stand. If he would like to discuss it further then fine but I have no interest in any further interaction with you Mr. Airfrog.

Yep, that must be it. I apologize if I came across that way, but I think you are making a joke based on the smilies.

WOW Kenny its just opinions. Dude don't get your panties in a bunch. Your the one taking this personal not me...
Back to topic I still want to hear the rational about why this is image doesn't work or could be better. I stated my reason why I don't think it should be changed and I'm anxious for your retort. When someone makes a statement they should always be able to defend it right?

Tom, I apologize for the tone I took above. The sentiment is genuine however. I offered my thoughts on the image and why it wasn't working for me, and it seemed to me you took exception to that and just wanted praise, not criticism. I think (as I said above) this shot is a compromise due to the surroundings (which you explained) and it's exactly those things that are holding it back from being what it could be. I think you know that and maybe that is why you responded in the way you did. In any case I won't belabor it further.

Good point and good question Robert.

P.S. I guess with a title like Serenity, it had to get ugly at some point. :) Sorry Tom.

I think one of the biggest compliments you can give a photographer is to have a passionate discussion about one of his pieces. One of the worst things is to not care or feel anything at all.
This is one very nice image and I clearly stated why I think it is. Good work Tom....

Actually I used my normal work flow in Photoshop CS3 and did some very minor dodging of the back portion of the boat. That was it.
