View Full Version : HONOLULU POTN MEET IV

ok, here it is. as mentioned previously in the HALE thread, i opened the discussion by mentioning the 14th of july for starters. the date is loose, and it's tentative subject to whether we can have a quorum for that date or if not, then where the date should be moved, etc.

also as previously mentioned, i srarted the discussion by mentioning using each other as models for shooting outdoor portraits. as to the particulars i think it's too early to go into that as a better idea for the meet may be brought up.

I'll be on Maui that day, I leave on the 13th. I'm open for the weekend on June 30-July 1st. Then I can do only the Saturdays on the 7 and 21st of July. Indoor shoot, I did mention it as a back-up if it rains. Chinatown sounds good, but at night it is a different story out there. How about a caravan type of shoot? One country, one urban? First we need a date and time because some of us work on weekends.

if june 30 is too soon for some, then please, although i know that hawaiian style is to be humble, quiet and self-sacrificing - "no shame speak up". the goal is to accomodate as many folks as possible on the day of the shoot, so please, make your situation known as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly.;)

so far, a rovng gypsy caravan of shooters looking for that million $$$ shot, a jaunt of pixel peepers stealthily working their way through chinatown and a round of on-location bashful mug mapping has been tabled.

any more ideas floating around in your heads as far as what else we can do to have a fun time honing our picture-taking skills while sharing tips and life experiences? please by all means throw'um down in this thread so we can discuss about it.

to reiterate, please don't hesitate to speak up. no idea is a bad idea and there's no penalty for contributing your thoughts. even if you're not able to participate in the shoot all ideas are welcome. well, all wholesome ideas are welcome anyway.:D

btw, i need to make a comment on prowling around chinatwon at night. if we stay on the main thoroughfares i think we'll be marginally safe. however, i'd go back street alley-hopping only if we hire police and paramedic escorts.;) :p

afaik, it's still good to go. go where and when is still up for grabs. it's one week away so we better start firming up plans soonest.

personally, a daytime chinatown shoot seems fun. functionally though, it doesn't seem to be a good idea if we all stick together in a herd and move through the site taking pics. i think to get good candid shots of the daily activities that make up the ambience of the district, innocuity and stealth would be the operating words for the day and you can't do that by attracting attention to ourselves as we would roaming around in a group.

we'd probably need to split up and regroup at predetermined place and time to share our experiences of the day. that being said, i'm sure there's lots of interesting subject matter to digitally memorialize in chinatown.

so my vote goes there, unless as previously mentioned, some of us went there already and that we should go somewhere else because of that.

although i think chinatown is good, i'm always open and easily convinced to shoot elsewhere.;)

I went to Chinatown today with my gang...quite a bit of activity during the day. I'll suggest keeping your gear in front of you with camera strap around your neck. Don't be bulky because of the people traffic. I have been approached by a "friendly" person small talking then asking for money. While he was chatting, I was looking for an area on his body for a straight-kick in case he was going to grab my camera. The sun and shadows in between the buildings and streets are harsh; I'd suggest outdoor shoots prior or after Noon. Lots of indoor stuff and you may get good with flash or a steady hand. There are lots of photo opportunities because it is a busy place. I would have no problem going there again for our Meet.

EDIT: Added photos for preview

i'm thinking the easiest place to meet up is at the cultural plaza promenade next to the canal around 8:00 am while there is still street parking available and less crowds. garage parking rates are absolutely outrageous in that area.

street parking available on kukui and surrounding streets in the area.

I'll be a little late, I finish work at 8:00 that morning. There is a municipal parking lot on Maunakea Street for $3 all day. I had to validate my car in the Cultural Plaza. Everything is pretty close so we can still meet there with no problem. Nice map Phocal, the "X" is where the old folks play chess and cards, makes good urban candid shots.

Those photos were shot after you and Darren turned around after completing a shot. :D I've seen Darren sneaking some candids too, so I'm waiting for some of those...

I took some shots of these members, but I didn't talk to them much. They just sort of stood around. Pretty boring people really.

Chris - I like the multi-colored straw shot a lot. You said you were looking for color and you got it.

Linkzi - I like your PP work on those portraits, even if I look like a wierdo.

G35 - nice shots. Not fair, I wanted to get a shot of a waving cat...

Nice color in your photos Darren. The candid of you was the "300" preset in lightroom.
