Tell me they are as great as advertised. Can I trust the given interior dimensions? I'm looking to buy one or two cases and am trying to decide what will fit in what. I'm going to get the ones with dividers, not cut up foam. Any thoughts on color of the cases? I do not fly, what fits on a plane is not an issue for me.

I use a 1610 with dividers, and yes they are every bit as good as advertised. To be honest it's heavy (I'm glad it's got wheels) but for transporting in the car of general storage it's excellent. Your making the right move in chosing dividers rather than the foam, they're easy to re-configure when you change equipment. Plus I've always suspected that the foam may give off a little dust eventually, although that may well be an unfounded and irrational worry. As far as colour goes, purely down to personal preference. I chose black, but if you need high visibility then maybe the yellow or orange would be better for you. Either way, a VERY tough case that can stand up to a lot of ill treatment and still protect your kit.

Awad, I'm wondering if you ever worry about your equipment wiggling around inside the case when transporting. I'll probably go for the dividers over the foam, but figured the foam would create a snugger fit. Also, can you tell me if you're able to stand the 70-200mm up instead of having to lay it down flat?

I can't tell if your case has wheels or not, but if it doesn't do you ever wish it had wheels? I have to think with all that equipment, the case must weight a ton.

Thanks

Go with the dividers , critters like to hide in foam and you can rearrange the dividers where the foam needs to be replaced .
I was looking at the soft case Pelicans at C&S in Palo alto yesterday . The Army green is ugly - but the wife liked the black one with blue insides .

It looks like the 70-200 f/2.8 IS is lying down flat. I'm wondering if it's possible to stand it straight up instead. Thanks

Matt,

I'm looking at your pics and really like this setup. I'm curious about the 2nd pic as it does not seem to match the others? What can you tell me about the screen looking pouches? Who makes them? Am I missing something or is this a second case you have?

Thanks...actually that is the "lid organizer" and it is available for just about every Pelican case out there. :)

Pelican cases are great protection for the money. Gives me peace of mind with my gear.

I'm rockin' a 1650 with foam. I use it for flights. I am considering a divider system now as I have more gear but I'd really consider putting foam back if for baggage handlers...

Well, this thread has made me add a 1650 with dividers and lid organizer to my next purchase. Maybe a smaller case as well.

uh...pics above....the only difference is the 1660 has the dividers instead of foam.

Yes, but I was hoping to see a 1650 full of camera gear. All I've been able to find to date, are pictures of a 1610 full of gear.

The one above shows the exact same case full of gear, just dividers instead of the foam. There is no difference in dimensions just the insert.

Hmmm...I think the 1650 is larger than the 1610.

The specs show the 1610 as:
24 9/16 x 19 5/16 x 11 15/16" (62.2 x 48.7 x 30.3 cm) (LxWxD)
22 3/16 x 17 1/8 x 10 9/16" (56.3 x 43.1 x 26.6 cm) (LxWxD)
25 lb (11.34 kg)

1650:
Exterior Dimensions 32 1/2 x 20 1/2 x 11 5/8" (82.55 x 52 x 28.7 cm) (HxWxD)
Interior Dimensions 29 x 17 7/8 x 10 1/2" (73.6 x 45.4 x 26.7 cm) (HxWxD)
Weight 33 lbs (15 kg)

You are correct, I was referring to the pictures above of the 1660. It is the same as the 1650 just a different insert.

I just posted this here:

EDIT: I would also like to add that the case is deep enough that you can put some of the lenses downwards and get even more space. I placed them on their sides because I have so much room and still have room for the next 2 lenses that I want to add to the collection.

I have a Pelican 1550. Only had it about 3 months. I had it strapped down to the front rack on my Yamaha Grizzly that was in the back of the truck. I was about 300 miles north of Anchorage in the Interior. Met a tractor trailer running about 75mph. The wind pulled the case off the 4 wheeler and away it went!:o I didn't realize it for about half a mile. Spun around to go get it. It had one little spot of road rash and that was it! I was pretty impressed with the outcome on this case. I guess I should say that none of my gear was in the case at the time. It was all safe and sound in the truck cab!! These Pelican cases are very durable!!:)
